Description
The concept is simple: good art, music and hospitality in a space that feels like a lounge room. The art attracts people and hospitality funds the art. Carefully managed, this could be a cultural nexus of artists and audiences. The reality has been more difficult. For six years a couple of passionate guys, each established in the right areas, have been fighting to give Canberra this platform. Musicians need it, audiences want it and the city still doesn't offer good food or coffee after 10pm. Passion to open this space adjoins a well recognised demand: “There is seen to be a shortage of a number of specialist facilities for professional arts practice, display and performance in areas including music, theatre, dance and the visual arts.” (Loxton Arts Review p85). Make it a space to share a coffee or lunch and new audiences will witness new art everyday. So why hasn't it happened? Termed differently, when was the last time you saw a new music venue open in Canberra? The city isn't designed to host loud, cultural spaces. And it's a new model, so investors need to be progressive and confident in a city without legislation to protect music venues. The space will let people to drink coffee beside new art, eat lunch beside live jazz, partake in public forums, stir tonic into gin (they'll be served individually) and - just occasionally - dance into tomorrow.
