As a part of the California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) Music Department‘s Community Engagement Initiative, we are proud to launch our inaugural Distinguished Artists Series for CSUSB’s upcoming academic year. Curated and directed by Director of Keyboard Studies at CSUSB Dr. Jocelyn Hua-Chen Chang, the Distinguished Artists Series is a three-part, yearlong educational concert series that features three internationally famed Classical musicians. One event is held each academic quarter and the final event is followed by Piano Day, a festival that celebrates keyboard studies. The Distinguished Artists Series showcases the piano and its diverse areas of study, including piano literature, piano pedagogy, piano improvisation and film music. By presenting the piano’s evolving history, the series will show how the keyboard is an instrument played by people of all backgrounds and skill levels who wish to improve their musical knowledge and technique, and better communicate ideas and emotions through music. With each event, the educational concert series will demonstrate the piano’s adaptable and instrumental role in music, develop a deeper understanding of music appreciation and inspire an enthusiastic desire to learn music through the piano. With the potential to open collaborative opportunities and build meaningful relationships between CSUSB, world-class guest artists and the communities of Southern California, the Distinguished Artists Series is being devised to not only engage with students and piano peers within the school but with the broader Southern California community as a whole. We look forward to growing this annual event in the years to come by developing partnerships with the regional community and featuring more distinguished artists from across the globe.
