Graduation day. It finally sank in on Friday that my year of teacher preparation purgatory was over (purgatory in the sense that it completely consumed my life). Yesterday brought my new reality vividly home as I sat in the principal's office at Good Hope Elementary school planning the special education schedule for 2015-16. Good Hope is everything I was looking for in a placement: the population I wanted to serve, access to an extraordinarily skilled mentor teacher, 1:1 technology (iPads), and the ability to continue developing both my push-in and classroom-based instructional skills. Better yet, they share my beliefs about effective special education. Push-in is important to ensure that students have access to the general education curriculum and their developmentally typical peers. However, it is not sufficient to meet IEP goals. To ensure that students meet their IEP goals prior to the 4th grade transition in reading focus (from "learning to read" to "reading to learn"), third grade students receive an intensive 2.5 hours of literacy instruction every morning. YAY!!!!!
