The dramatic and evocative ruined cliff top fortress of Dunnottar Castle was the home of the Earls Marischal, once one of the most powerful families in the land. William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, the Marquis of Montrose and the future King Charles II have graced the Castle with their presence. Most famously though, it was at Dunnottar Castle that a small garrison held out against the might of Cromwell’s army for eight months and saved the Scottish Crown Jewels, the ‘Honours of Scotland’, from destruction. Visit Dunnottar Castle for an unforgettable experience and discover the importance of Dunnottar – an impregnable fortress that holds many rich secrets of Scotland’s colourful past.

Walking and Cycling: From Stonehaven visitors can walk to the Castle along the recently upgraded Coatal Path (approx 2.5 miles) You will need good walking boots as the path is very undulating and we do not recommend the route in very bad weather and strong winds. Cyclists have two options, the path mentioned above, which would be for the more technical riders or the road above which runs parellel with the path. It's slightly quicker and easier to use.
