Description

The Durham Co-operative Nursery School was founded in 1957 by a group of women who wanted to offer a pre-school and a kindergarten experience to the young children of this community. Since that time kindergarten has been included in the public school system and the Co-op continues to provide a quality early childhood education program Parent involvement is essential to the school's philosophy. It provides an invaluable experience in parenting. Parents gain a better understanding of a child's behavior and development, gain new friendships and a sense of community. The children are allowed to develop at their own pace in an enriching environment that respects each child's individual developmental differences, thereby fostering their self-esteem and independence. Little did the founders (the Night Owl Homemakers) realize what a tradition they had begun. Today the Co-op employes the director and four teacher assistants. We are about children discovering and mastering their environment while learning to respect one another. We are about parents working together, serving as board members, helping raise funds for the school and being classroom aides. Most importantly, we are about children and parents making friendships that last long after the Co-op. As our school mascot Orson would say " It's a whale of a fun time!" Pre-School Classes: 3 Year Old Class Meets: Tuesday and Thursday 8:45 am to 12:00 pm 4 Year Old Class Meets: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9:00 am to 12:00 pm Or Extended Day Option 9:00 am to 2:00 pm Our Goals * To help children reach their full potential * To promote social interaction * To provide an enriching environment for the development of children * To encourage children to question, discover, evaluate and invent new ideas that enable them to become successful learners * To nurture self-esteem and self understanding * To foster the development of language * To promote independence Our Program * Music * Pretend Play * Social Interaction * Games * Language and Creative arts * Science * Puppet Play * Field Trips * Gesell Developmental Kindergarten Readiness Test (done with all the 4 year olds that are moving forward to kindergarten) If you would like more information or want to schedule a visit please give us a call or send us an email.
