We've added four wonderful, inspiring members to our club during the Smedley Award membership drive of the past two months (Aug & Sep). Matt Eggers gave his Ice Breaker at the Aug. 27 meeting. He kept us constantly laughing, telling us about himself, including his rebellious high school rock band days. Brad Taylor has already helped Daniela in making our Facebook page more appealing with his gift of photography. When I briefly left the room and returned during our last speech contest, he and Doug seemed to have gotten into trash talking, so he is fitting in very well. Rich Goodier is a pastor. It is our great honor and privilege to help him become a world-class speaker! He will be giving his Ice Breaker at our next meeting, at which time we will officially install him as a member. Dr. Jianfei Liu is a research scientist at the Duke Medical Center and is new to Durham. He has been doing brilliant work on computer vision. He will give his Ice Breaker at our next meeting and we'll be officially installing him as a member at that time as well. All four of these guys have already given Table Topics speeches in our club. It's been a pleasure getting to know them. We are all looking forward to their contributions to our club as they each work and grow towards their personal goals. -Manu

Quotes: “Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.” 1984 by George Orwell This would make a very interesting concept for a speech!

What an awesome meeting tonight! We had a very broad range of speeches and learned so many new concepts! Allison won Best Speaker for a speech based on a book review of HAPPY MONEY by Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton. 🎉 (I'm going to buy the book tomorrow) Kevin won Best Evaluator for his evaluation of Save 5 Lives by Costing 1 by Yaying. 🎉 (over half the room killed 1 life vs. 5) New member Maxine won Best Table Topics with an improvisational speech on Why Space Exploration Is Important. 🎉 (tickets to Mars anyone?)
