EAL Consultant and Trainer

Description

With over 25 years of experience in education, Samia works closely with primary and secondary schools to raise the attainment of students who have English as an Additional Language. Formerly a Lead Advisory Teacher for Norfolk County Council, she works throughout Norfolk and further afield to advise schools and promote good practice in supporting young arrivals, including refugees and asylum seekers, from nursery to sixth forms. As part of this work she has: ➢ extensive experience in planning and delivering successful EAL training across the county and further afield for senior leadership, teachers, support staff and trainee teachers ➢ developed clearer and more robust initial testing/assessment systems and admissions procedures for new arrivals ➢ developed expertise in home language GCSEs available for EAL students ➢ established and run Networks for EAL Co-ordinators from across Norfolk ➢ established clearer procedures for collecting thorough and accurate data, prior to data analysis of EAL/BME groups with senior leadership ➢ worked closely with schools, Social Services and other agencies for successful integration of refugee and unaccompanied asylum seeker students ➢ given advice and guidance on race awareness (including relevant legislation) to members of senior leadership teams and other school staff on recognising and reporting racist incidents Now working as a Freelance Consultant, her training may include the above and: ➢ Assessments to identify beginners to more advanced EAL learners ➢ How to identify next targets and monitor progress in English acquisition ➢ Practical strategies to support and teach EAL students in class ➢ Effective admissions procedures and induction for new arrivals ➢ What data needs to be collected for the EAL cohort and why ➢ Recommended resources (including online resources) Often based on modules from the National Strategies documents ‘New Arrivals Excellence Programme’ and 'Ensuring the Attainment of more advanced learners of EAL’’, all sessions include dissemination of electronic and reusable resource materials. In addition, Samia is ➢ a qualified and experienced external examiner at GSCE level ➢ a qualified Arts Award Advisor who can deliver at Bronze and Silver Award levels ➢ a main facilitator for Oxfam-funded project Cultural Diversity in the Primary Classroom for UEA PGCE students in 2004/5 ➢ the Educational Consultant for a major Heritage Lottery Fund grant for online resource South Asian Diaspora Arts and Literature Archive in 2005 ➢ the author of Our Big Land, a teaching pack on Romany Gypsy history, produced by The Romany Theatre Company, and sent to 200 secondary schools in 2005 ➢ a co-author of All Different, All Equal, a set of anti-racist teaching resources for use in all Norfolk secondary and middle schools, produced in 1996
