THE Virgin London Marathon features strongly in the Easy Runner short list this month with some great examples of outstanding running that at first hand didn’t always catch the eye. But marathon running isn’t just about London as local runners also shone in smaller but no less attractive events such as Taunton while the National Road Relays and the local Aztec West Fast 5k also provided opportunities to impress. And April also marked the start of the track and field season and the popular Yate Sprints & Hurdles Challenge was again well attended and saw some excellent performances. As always the winner will get a pair of adizero training shoes from Easy Runner, the leading athletics retailer in the city which can be oud in St Michael’s Hill. JESSIE SANZO: The mother-of-three and former recreational runner - she only started in 2011 after entering the Bristol 10k –clocked the fourth fastest short stage in the 2015 National Road Relays to help Bristol & West AC finish second overall. Additionally Sanzo ran a PB of 17mins 11secs to finish first woman in the Aztec West Fast 5k and was ranked top over-35 cross-country runner in the country by Athletics Weekly in 2015 for the second year in a row. DECLAN WALTERS: The 16-year-old North Somerset AC sprinter, who has switched to Alistair Abrams successful sprints group lead by GB junior Chris Stone, set PBs in the 200m (23.66secs) and 100m (11.3secs) at the Yate Sprints & Hurdles Challenge to build upon his promising indoor season. STUART LEANEY: The 36-year-old North Somerset AC runner not only raced to a new personal best in the London Marathon but has also emerged as the quickest man in the Bristol region. Leaney clocked 2hrs 27mins 44secs to shave 55 seconds off his previous best and dip under 2hrs 28mins for the first time – and move to second in the South West Rankings behind Bideford’s Mark Jenkin (PB 2:25.18). FRANCESCA EDDY: It may not have been a headline performance but the Bristol & West runner will have been delighted to smash her PB with a time of 3hrs10mins 37secs for second place in the Taunton marathon – especially as her previous best was 3:24.01 which she ran in Boston last year. That is a significant improvement by anyone’s standard. JACK HOLBROOK: The Yate sprinter had a good start to the season with the 14-year-old winning the 100m at his own club’s Sprint & Hurdles Challenge in a hand-timed PB of 11.9secs followed by an electronic PB of 12.60secs set when winning his 100m at the Bristol & West Open the following week. He also recorded a PB of 38.67secs over 300m. STEPHEN O’HALLORAN: If you are looking for an example that persistence and hard work pays then look no further than the man from Great Western Runners. Aged 42 and in his 13th marathon O’Halloran broke 2hrs 40mins for the first time in London with a sparkling time of 2:35.38 which is the fastest M40 time in the South West this year and puts him third in the Bristol list behind fellow short list nominee Stuart Leaney and former competition winner Jarlath Mckenna (2:29.19).
