A SCHOOL IN A THEATRE A national school The ESAD school of the Théâtre National de Strasbourg was created in 1954 by Michel Saint-Denis. It is a national school under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and Communication which trains the future professionals of the performing arts. The school’s specificity is double: -firstly, its existence is inseparable from that of the TNS Theatre, as the school is located in the same building as the theatre -secondly, the pedagogical logic put forward is that of interdisciplinarity : actors, scenographers/costume designers, technicians, stage directors and playwrights all work together in the same class (or “group”). This unique tie which brings together the School of the TNS and a national theatre run by a stage director is key to the students’ training. Indeed, their presence in the theatre allows them to be in constant contact with the artistic dynamic as well as the different technical set-ups relative to the TNS’s activity. The presence of theatre troup with permanent actors recruited by the TNS, collaborators which work regularly with the staff, a technical crew and administrative staff engaged in defending an artistic all contribute in strengthening these special ties, be it through the workshops led by the artistic and technical members of staff or through more informal exchanges which result from life in a theatre. Conversely, the presence of students and of actual pedagogical research projects where the findings are regularly presented in the theatre enhances and galvanizes the artistic project of the TNS itself. The partnership enables TNS School students to be awarded e university diploma equivalent to a Bachelor of Arts or a Masters degree, depending on the student'academic undergraduate level when he or she entered the school. The TNS also gives the national diploma for professional actors 'Diplôme National de Comédien Professionnel) recognized by the ministry of Culture. Auditions for new students are held two years out of three. Two groups of students, or approximatively fifty students, are therefore always present in the School. The curriculum lasts three years in all alternating and combining weekly classes and intensive periods where students participate in a workshop imagined and led by a professional.
