Educating on Education

We aim to create awareness on the status & challenges surrounding educating children in less developed countries. "Feed the brain, feed the stomach" Educating on Education is a not-for-profit organization focusing on creating awareness on the educational challenges faced by millions of children around world. The challenges of acquiring a quality (or even adequate) education in less developed countries is an ongoing and escalating problem. The issues are multi-faceted. One of the mains issues is that of the schools themselves. They lack the resources to provide a stable facility in which to educate the children in. Children are often times seen being educated in buildings without a roof or in buildings without a floor. Sometimes this means that the children are sitting on mud and/or dirt in an open area where they are susceptible to sicknesses. Not to mention, such an environment is extremely uncomfortable for a student to learn in. How can students properly focus and study in such unpleasant conditions? The short answer is, they can’t…yet students there are still eager and ready to learn. They have a thirst for knowledge which we can quench if only we cared to direct our taps to them. Unfortunately, the challenging problems of education in Less Developed Countries does not end there.. that is just the beginning. Many other issues such as lack of teacher training, lack of resources by the schools or children, poverty etc. contribute to an already dire situation. Our focus in this not-for-profit venture is to improve the quality of education for the children in these areas because we believe that education is the solution to many of the other problems prevalent in the lives of the less fortunate. Our motto is “Feed the brain, feed the stomach”. We believe that by educating a person, they are equipped to make the right decisions and progress in life. In other words, an education is like giving them a tool to fix their own situation. In effect, we feel it is a sustainable solution as oppose to simply feeding a person for a day, whom will be hungry again the next morning.

Description

The challenges of acquiring a quality (or even adequate) education in less developed countries is an ongoing and escalating problem. The issues are multi-faceted. One of the mains issues is that of the schools themselves. They lack the resources to provide a stable facility in which to educate the children in. Children are often times seen being educated in buildings without a roof or in buildings without a floor. Sometimes this means that the children are sitting on mud and/or dirt in an open area where they are susceptible to sicknesses. Not to mention, such an environment is extremely uncomfortable for a student to learn in. We find that 31 million students worldwide dropout of primary school. 36 % or 11.07 million of these children originate from the Sub-Saharan region and the number is even greater in the South and West Asia regions. In these regions the number is as high as 13.54 million. The question becomes apparent: why? Why is there such a larger number of drop outs or those who cannot complete their Primary school education? Before we delve in to answer this question, lets explore some more statistics. UNESCO identifies that in 2010, approximately 61 million children were eligible for primary school but not enrolled and that little under half (47% ) of these students were never anticipated to enter school anyway. Though approximately 26% of these 61 million attended school, they left due to some unknown reason ie. they were unable to finish Primary school. It is important to note that in low-income and developing countries it is extremely vital that a person gets an education because it is estimated that by doing so, it can increase the person’s future income by 10% . In multiple reasearch studies conducted around the world to determine the causes of educational problems, these were the most common: - Lack of teacher skills, training, interest - Too many teachers simply don’t care about global issues to be bothered - Lack of resources (money, teaching materials, etc) - cultural isolation (ex. children have to stay back to labor in order to eat) We at EoE believe we can make a difference. We believe we can make a sustainble change in the lives of these children for good by alleviating the challenges they currently face in order to acquire an education.
