Description

The Electric Eel is a neighborhood café and bar for all of Karlsruhe. We aim to provide a comfortable atmosphere for our guests to take refuge from stress of city life and enjoy simple delights such as delicious coffee, tea, cakes, craft beer, cocktails, and a heavy dose of vinyl sounds. We love children and will be happy to have parents with kids join us during the day. We will do all that we can to provide an atmosphere where parents can hopefully find a bit of relaxation and enough time to at least enjoy a nice coffee (or whatever) and something tasty to snack on. Our staff will be trained to deal with children and you won't be bothering us at all if you require a spare diaper or something to help engage your child while you steal a precious few moments for yourself. In the evening, we will transform our space from day time café into a more adult setting with a range of high ball, cocktail and beer offerings, each created with the aim of getting you something quickly, but of a high quality. We don't want you to wait 30 minutes for a drink. We realize a place like ours is where people come to meet and enjoy one another's company and conversation. We will do our best to provide the service you require to make those moments just how you pictured it. And if you want something more involved and don't mind waiting a bit as we create it for you, we're happy to do that as well. Something else we aim to do is create an alliance of Karlsruhe small businesses that support and promote each other. Our spirits will come from Nick & Nora in Weststadt. Our bier from Bier. near Mühlburger Tor. A large portion of our vinyl will come from Studio Eins in Südweststadt, and we'll even have a box of records for sale with a record player for our guests to use with headphones. Our coffee will come from Espresso Tostino, our cakes from another local supplier (still looking). We also want to be a good neighbor at the Werderplatz. It's not yet clear how we will manage it, but in our mind it would be great to have fairly regular puppet theater for the kids in the summer. This would be a small gesture from us, again, so parent's can carve out 15 minutes to have a coffee or a beer, or whatever, while their little ones are being entertained. We have a million ideas, like using the Electric Eel as a place where digital workers can get out from behind the computer to do some physical labor, and to serve real people they can see and talk to, and get immediate feedback from. We don't know how this would work, but we envision a network of agencies who sign-up to take part in this program and be able to offer to their staff as an outlet for stress relief. Perhaps someone out there has always wanted to work in a place like ours, but leaving their well paid job behind a computer isn't really an option. Maybe we can make it so they can do both, and allow them to get back to being more centered, and satisfied with work. Maybe. We will host regular pop-up events, we will host guest bartenders from all over the world. We will support artists and put on gallery shows. We'll have live performances, and pre-recorded video presentations that are intended expressly for our audience. We will not be afraid to get a little weird, either. We will try to make our everyday operations creative, friendly and engaging. We want you as a customer, but also as a member of a community of users that get more out of a visit than just something to eat or drink. We want the Electric Eel to be something that is satisfying on many levels, and something that makes your life more enjoyable. Perhaps we won't get it all right all at once, but we will never relent in our effort to be the best we can be, and to serve you with the respect an attention you deserve. For now we are in our renovations phase as we transform the space from what was the Bento into what will become the Electric Eel. I can't share too much of what that will look like, but for anyone that has been to the Commodore Room, you will know how important the presentation of our space is to us. Our guesstimate for opening is late May or early June. Make sure you follow this page for up to date information.
