The American Embassy Club, Bonn, was THE private family club with international flair. Since established in 1953, it stood as the focal point for politics, society and family. It was suited for everyday use by private individuals as well as by businesses. The big events and happenings in the Club, such as the Military Ball, the Marine Ball, the Press Ball, the large dinner dances, the New Year’s Eve Gala or the famous Lobster dinner evenings, will never be forgotten. Although many years have passed, people that experienced the great hospitality provided by the members and the employees of the Club, look back to these events with fond memories and warm feelings. In 2013 this famous Club would have celebrated its 60th anniversary, but unfortunately it has been closed since December 1999. Created by the American Government over 50 years ago, the Club became an institution which the people in Bonn cherished. Its microcosm contributed to the creation of many very friendly German-American relations, many of which lasted to the present day. After the world war, the Club offered the ideal platform for integration of the international diplomatic corps and the Bonn community. The English language contributed to the basics for international understanding. On the eve of what would have been its 60th anniversary this year, we would like to re-establish this unique and fine institution. Even if unable to persuade the Bonn International School to sublease the original building of the Club for this undertaking, we still believe that an institution like the American Embassy Club is desperately needed in Bonn - the UN-City - with one of the biggest international societies. We would like to revive the enormous commitments made by this great diplomatic community to the people of Bonn, and make sure they do not fall into oblivion. With your help we will create a second home, a new Club, where families and business people can meet and foster their friendships, no matter where they come from or how long they will stay, just like in the days of the American Embassy Club. The majority of members of the American German Business Club, Bonn e.V. (AGBC) have already expressed their intention to become members of a new Club. The President of the AGBC as well as the President of the International Women’s Club are big supporters of this concept and have committed to this project. We need your help, support and commitment! To be able to brace this big project, realize it and lead it to success, we will need more. We need: - binding membership commitments - political support - support in marketing an public relation - financial support for marketing and public relation If you would like to support our cause and be part in the American Embassy Club revival, please contact: Michael Breitsprecher embassy-club-bonn@outlook.com Any suggestions and support will be greatly appreciated This page has not only the purpose to remember the good days we all had at the Club, but to prove that even after over a decade after the Club closed, the idea, values and spirit treasured in our memoirs are still valid in the present time here in Bonn. We are aware that the recreation center has been torn down. Talks with the BIS as well as the latest news reports do show that the school is not in favor of the Club idea nor interested to continue conversations we had with them last year about this project. But there are still properties that are ideal for re-establishing a new Club, based on the roots and the spirit of the former Embassy Club. Right now there are three alternative locations besides the historical American Embassy Club building in Plittersdorf. The more "likes" this page gets the stronger we are talking to the city and with various landlords. Of course it will not be possible to just tie on to October 1999 when the Club closed. Not only the offers of the new Club will be brought to the present time, but also a new name will have to be chosen to acknowledged the changes of the Bonn from the capital of Germany to a UN City and stand of important international companies and organizations.
