Engine House No. 9

at 611 North Pine Street, Tacoma

around 1908 - At the sound of the alarm the night watchman would open the stable gates (where the bar is located now) the horses would trot into position for harnessing and within 30 seconds the crew would have the steamer fire lit, pre-heat water pipes disconnected and be underway. The original accordion doors which were spring-loaded opened in seconds causing the horses to bolt out much like a horse race track. Engine House No. 9 was built in 1907 to provide fire protection for Tacoma's North End. For many years it served as battalion headquarters. It was the last station in Tacoma to convert from horse-drawn to mechanized equipment - in 1919 when Rufus Harben and Earle More made the final symbolic run aboard an Amoskeg steam pumper drawn by the horses Nip, Dick and Joe. Engine House No. 9 was in service until 1965 when it was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Vandals touched off no less than three fires in the building in the ensuing seven years. Although the structure remained, it was stripped and battered and its bones exposed to winter snow and rain when it was discovered by a young newspaper reporter in 1971. Win Anderson and Bob Lane purchased and restored the building, converting the lower floor to a tavern and the second story into an apartment. In August of 2011 the Xitco and Paradise families, having been longtime admirers of Engine House No. 9, became proprietors and stewards of one of Tacoma's Historical Landmarks.

Food & Drink category, Tacoma

Cafe Brosseau
2716 North 21st Street Tacoma , WA 98406 null

A family friendly cafe where the coffee and food are local and fresh. Our cafe is named for the Brosseau twins. They were French-Canadian and lived in Tacoma at the turn of the 20th Century. In 1907 they built a grocery store and home at North 21st and Anderson. The original grocery building remains and now houses our cafe and Mash, a home brewing supply store. We named it to honor the history of the building, the area, and because we like how the name sounds! To pronounce it just think "Brew-So." Appropriate for a coffee shop, n'est-ce pas?

Stink Cheese-Meat
628 St Helens Ave Tacoma , WA 98402 null

While the word “stink” can conjure up some negative connotations, we at STINK Cheese-Meat believe the word represents everything good about old world food and drink. The Europeans have always treated wine and beer as food. For centuries they have understood the relationship between good food and drink that goes beyond satisfying hunger – it facilitates passion.  We want you to experience what we already know. With this said, we know STINK is not for everyone. You won’t find a big, buttery-oakey chardonnay or bold and bitter IPA, but if you are willing to step out of the box, we will show you a beer or wine that has stood the test of time. Our beverages not only taste amazing, they tell a story. Add a hunk of cheese or cured meat to the equation and it’s time to take a journey you will want to take again, and again.
