English Language and Linguistics at UCLan has something to offer every student, with opportunities for work experience and study overseas.

Description

Whether your interest is in language structure (syntax, phonetics and phonology, morphology), how language varies according to user and context, or the teaching of language, English Language and Linguistics at UCLan has something to offer every student. Alongside an exciting range of modules relating to areas, such as language change and acquisition, language and gender, language and identity, political discourse and argumentation, the language of literature, forensic linguistics, as well as core modules in TESOL, we have an integrated programme of study which aims to enhance students’ proficiency in written English. With budding teachers and speech therapists in mind, we have developed a unique career focused suite of modules which look at National Curriculum English, language pathology and clinical linguistics. Alternatively, students may choose to specialise in the related areas of media, forensic and political discourse. There are many opportunities to gain direct experience of applying English to the workplace, through work experience, employability projects and opportunities to study overseas. Alongside the subject modules, the English Language Skills Initiative for Employability (ELSIE) helps students to develop skills which are much sought after by employers. In 2011, the ELSIE Project received national recognition from the LLAS centre for ‘exemplary’ sector practice in enhancing the career prospects of UCLan’s English Language and Linguistics students. To enhance career prospects, students complete a project in their second year which focuses on 'Communication at Work'. Student projects have included: The Survivor’s Guide to starting High School, PR for West Lancashire Voluntary Service, designing resources for schools with the Rosemere Cancer Foundation, The Stroke Association, NSPCC Northwest Aerobathon Fundraiser, Preston FM, Lancashire Evening Post, Liverpool Echo, White Water Writers, Centurus and overseas projects with International Volunteer HQ, MaaChild in Kenya, Nashville Country Club (Assistant Editor internship), Reach Out Volunteers and Volunteer Teacher Thailand (funded by the UCLan Travel Bursary).
