Epilepsy Ottawa is a not-for-profit, charitable agency dedicated to improving the quality of life for those living with epilepsy or seizure disorders. Epilepsy Ottawa is a non-profit charitable organization formed in 1987 that strives to raise awareness and education about epilepsy in Ottawa and the surrounding communities. Our objective is to provide information, support and social contact for those living with epilepsy in the region. The services of Epilepsy Ottawa are available to anyone with epilepsy & to anyone concerned with epilepsy issues. In the Ottawa and surrounding areas served by Epilepsy Ottawa, about 15,500 people have epilepsy. In addition, over 3,500 people in our service area have intractable seizures that cannot be treated successfully by anti-seizure medications or surgery. Our organization is funded by: donations; sponsorships; grants; fundraising events & memberships. We do not charge for any of our services but donations are always greatly appreciated.

Epilepsy Ottawa is a not-for-profit, charitable agency dedicated to improving the quality of life for those living with epilepsy or seizure disorders and those closest to them, through support services, education, advocacy, and on-going public awareness. Our Vision: Creating a community where persons affected by epilepsy or seizure disorders are empowered and supported to live life to the fullest, free of stigma and barriers. Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder, the effects of which vary widely from person to person, and can range from mild and relatively minor to extremely serious and debilitating. Epilepsy presents serious challenges to health, well-being and self-esteem, especially in the young, in teens and in vulnerable populations with seriously disabling conditions. Epilepsy can cause lack of independence, isolation and social stress, learning and work challenges, as well as direct health and safety risks. People living with epilepsy have particular challenges -- epilepsy can negatively affect the learning and social growth of children; the employment, lifestyle and financial security of adults; and the independence and safety of seniors. Epilepsy is a physical condition caused by a malfunction of the electrical signals which control the operation of the brain. The term “epilepsy” covers a wide variety of disturbances in consciousness and awareness, ranging from brief staring spells and mild sensations or interruptions in normal thoughts/feelings to major motor seizures with convulsions and loss of consciousness in some. (See FAQ for more on seizures). A single seizure is not epilepsy, seizures must reoccur for epilepsy to be diagnosed. Up to 1 % of the population has epilepsy! In Ottawa and the surrounding regions, over 8,000 people have epilepsy. Approximately 30% of whom have intractable seizures that cannot be treated successfully by anti-seizure medications. The effect of an epilepsy diagnosis goes beyond the individual; it impacts the entire family. One in ten people will experience a seizure in their lifetime. Studies show that epilepsy continues to be one of the major stigmatizing conditions in the world for all ages. People experiencing seizures are vulnerable to misunderstanding, and rejection, and their ability to live life to the fullest can be profoundly affected. Epilepsy remains a somewhat hidden condition and is not well-understood by the public. Lack of knowledge means that many seizures are still unrecognized and mishandled.

Le 52e rallye Perce-Neige aura lieu le 4 février 2017 / 52nd Perce-Neige rally edition will be on held on February 4, 2017 En bref Le Perce-Neige, crée en 1965 par le CASLL est d’abord un rallye de navigation qui évolue vers un mode plus compétitif avec son inscription au championnat du Québec en 1968. Devenu en 1975 une épreuve du Championnat du Canada, il doit quitter les Basses-Laurentides en quête de régions plus accueillantes. Ainsi, de 1979 à 1993, le Perce-Neige est couru dans la région de Maniwaki. L’interdiction des rallyes dans les ZEC entraîne d’abord l’annulation de l’épreuve en 1994, puis son déménagement à Pembroke, Ontario, en 1995, jusqu’à 1999. La diminution des activités forestières dans le Pontiac que le Perce-Neige fréquente depuis Pembroke, provoque en 2000 le retour subit du Perce-Neige à Maniwaki, retour facilité par la modification toute fraîche de la loi sur les ZEC et par la collaboration exceptionnelle de la région. In Brief The Perce-Neige is a navigational rally during its first decade. Then it becomes a performance event, slowly migrating towards less populated areas to allow for the closing of roads. From 1979 to 1993, the Perce-Neige is run in the Maniwaki Region. Some restrictions forced its cancellation in 1994, then it was moved to Pembroke, Ontario, in 1995. But in 2000, following the same restrictions in the Pontiac region, and thanks to legal changes as well as a renewed collaboration in the Maniwaki region, the Perce-Neige comes back to Maniwaki where it quickly finds its marks again.
