Esperanza's Children is a pending 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization aimed to benefit hospitalized children and their families.
Cierra Kwan, at the time sixteen, founded our organization after having had a profound experience with a hospitalized child named Mario and his mother, Tricy. Mario was a normal one-year-old boy, laughing and playing with his family and friends before he contracted a chronic disease that landed him in the hospital, where he almost died not even having turned two years old at the time. The little boy lay in bed staring off into space as if he did not recognize his mother, any of his family, or even the simplest of things such as television. Because he and his mother were from out of town and both needed to stay at the hospital for several months, Mario spent his second birthday lying in a hospital bed. Mario's mother, father, and sister waited day in and day out for Esperanza (the Spanish word for "hope") that Mario was going to be okay. Regardless of anything thrown their way, his family stuck by Mario's side through every step of this terrifying process. Experiencing this terrifying journey alongside Mario and his family, our founder decided that something must be done in order to help kids like Mario and their families going through these rough times. From that experience came Esperanza's Children. Today, Mario and his family are back at home with smiles on their faces and love in their hearts. Mario uses sign language to communicate and can only eat pureed foods, but this boy, now incredibly big, shows us all nothing but heart. Mario's family is incredibly thankful for every day they were given with him and never take another day for granted. Their strength is truly inspiring, and now from their struggle, Esperanza’s Children will ease the burden of other hospitalized children and their families for many years to come.
