To respond to the social and economical needs of the Ethiopian refugee & immigrant community in the Santa Clara County.

Description

Of the millions forced to flee Ethiopia in the 1980’s due to the political change, Santa Clara County has become home to approximately 25,000 Ethiopians. In addition, in the 1990’s hundred more recipients of the diversity visa lottery have made San Jose their home largely because of the already existing large population of Ethiopians, opportunity of employment and weather. To begin meeting some of the needs of these impoverished people, Ethiopian Community Services, Inc. (ECS) was established on April 5, 1991 as a not-for-profit organization. The effort to establish such an organization goes back to the early 1980’s. The limited funds granted by the County of Santa Clara enabled ECS to hire a highly qualified and dedicated Executive Director. ECS is governed by nine (9) Members Board of Directors. These Board Members are volunteers who do not receive compensation for services render to ECS. They are talented, experienced, and respected community leaders from varied ethnic background. The other volunteer group is the Advisory Committee. The Advisory committee consists of selected community leaders and experts. As an advisory Committee, they serve to the Board of Directors and various ECS programs. Its membership is composed of an ad hoc group of individuals assembled for a particular reason.

ECS SERVICE PROGRAM A. Counseling This service is designed to help clients address emotional distresses and family conflicts in culturally sensitive group therapy environments. In Ethiopian culture, it is common to let elders and extended family provide counseling on any issue. However, in the US, counseling is provided of mental health care provider that is unknown to the individual. Seeking any form of outside counseling carries the stigma of major mental illness, thus, many of our clients are reluctant to seek counseling from outside counselor. ECS provides individual and family counseling in marital disputes, child abuse, domestic violence and depression . Individuals with serious problems are referred to Santa Clara County Department of Mental health for psychiatric evaluation. B. Information and Referral ECS has established an information and referral system for Ethiopian refugees and immigrants. This system is designed to assist clients to understand, access, and effectively utilize resources in areas such as housing, welfare, legal matter, education and employment. Specific of these services include: resume development, employment listing's, job search and training programs, placement services, rental references, and representation at agencies. C. Interpretation and Translation In any society, language is a very important tool. Because most of our clients are not proficient in the English language, ECS spend a tremendous amount of time translating legal documents and interpreting for clients in court, hospital, and government offices. Ethiopia is an ancient country with over 70 distinct languages. Our Translation/interpretation service is being provided in three main languages: Ameharic, Oromiffaa, and Tigrigna. D. Community Orientation ECS prepares informative workshops to inform and educate the Ethiopian refugees and immigrants on basic social adjustment issues. Culture shock, job search, family issues, women’s issues, self-esteem, enhancement general nutrition, general health and citizenship are some of the popular topics. We are consistently challenged to provide additional services to our Ethiopian Community. E. Computer Training It was only a dream, an idea and a concept, but now, after years of hard work, with many devoted contributors, a Computer Training Program is born. In our continued effort to encourage our clients to self-sufficiency. ECS along with African American Community Services Agency, will provide Basic Computer Skill Training. Through this course, trainees will be able to understand basic computer skills and be proficient in entry level word processing using Ms word/Excel. F. After-School Program ECS provide services to elementary, junior high and high school students in its after school program. This program includes the following activities: Homework Lab: In this activity we help students succeed in school by developing their skills in: reading, math, problem solving, team-work, study habits, note taking, and preparation for exam. We also guide and help them to complete their homework which is essential to mastering a skill before they can move to the next level.. Counseling Activity: In this component we guide students to be responsible for their behavior, grades, self-control, and achievement. Students are counseled both in group and individual sessions. The group counseling sessions provide opportunities for students to learn skill for success both in school and after graduation. Counselors individually monitor student attendance and discipline. Computer Training: Students learn to use the internet, improve their keyboarding skill, and learn to develop word processing skill which will help them in writing their papers for school projects easily.
