The Ballarat Gift strives above all else to increase awareness of and participation in the sport of athletics. The Club aims to deliver the most modern program, venue and marketing in the sport, and to maintain the Ballarat Gift’s standing as Australia’s second-richest and most anticipated professional running event, behind only Stawell. Background: Ballarat’s association with professional running dates back to the 1800s when miners raced on handicap basis for the ‘gift’ of a gold nugget. The first recorded Ballarat Gift was held in 1949. The Ballarat Athletic Club was formed in 1989 by a group of volunteers dedicated to staging the annual carnival. Since then the Ballarat Gift has been voted the Victorian Athletic League’s meeting of the year five times. The Club remains an organisation of volunteers.
