Attached to the Saarland University, the Europa-Institut has been offering its specialized and regularly updated graduation program “European and International Law” for a period of more than 30 years.
Every year about 80 students from more than 40 nations are absolving their LL.M. in Saarbrücken, which underlines the very international atmosphere of the program.
Saarbrücken’s geographical location brings many advantages to the program: e.g. its proximity to European institutions – to the legislative bodies of the European Union as well as the European Council – which facilitates access to highly ranking experts as lecturers. This permits to create an in-depth diversified program offering theoretical as well as practical insights.
IN 2011 THE EUROPA-INSTITUT CELEBRATED ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY
The first director of the Europa-Institut, Prof. Dr. Joseph-François Angelloz, had a precise vision for the Institute, namely “to research the Europe of the future, to teach young people educated in the traditional manner of each different country about Europe, to offer education from a uniform European perspective for students from these countries and, perhaps before long, to produce Europe’s driving forces”. Much of this vision has since become a reality at the Europa-Institut.
The curriculum is specifically tailored to meet the exigencies of the European job market, and imparted by use of a range of teaching methods in order to convey both practical as well as theoretical knowledge. Our courses and seminars encourage top level discussions and are led by academics who are familiar with actual practice, or by professionals who are ardent about theory.
Since its foundation in 1951, the Europa-Institut has not only followed the European integrational process, it has experienced it first-hand. The impressive figure of 5,000 students from countries such as Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Moldova, the Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Czech Republic, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay and the USA, illustrates the universal interest in the subject-matter Europe, and also highlights how fundamentally important a specifically "European" education is viewed.
Our unique system of teaching, centered on European and International law and the questions surrounding it, renders us the specialists for a European education and makes our students future Europe-experts. Our geographical proximity to the European Institutions allows for a dynamic interplay, whilst our excellent facilities and choice of leisure facilities and skill enhancement courses provide added value.
Our deep-rooted tradition and accomplishments to date constitute both an inducement as well as an obligation for us to continue offering our students a study program of the highest possible quality. This is because we recognize that in order to flaunt an unremitting and impressive record of performance in the future, it is paramount to continue to fulfill ones reputation in the present.
