LEADING IN A MULTICULTURAL AND GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT The Executive Leadership Academy (ELA) is sponsored by the University of California, Berkeley Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE). ELA provides visionary higher education leaders to guide their institutions in an increasingly multicultural global environment. The Academy's curriculum is based on a series of 25 executive skills and is designed to enable persons of all backgrounds who may be interested in appointments to positions such as deans, provosts, chancellors, and presidents. The Academy is an intensive and focused training institute taught by 34 Faculty members featuring predominantly provosts, presidents, and chancellors. One hundred seventy Fellows have graduated from this program since the first Executive Leadership Academy in 2011, many of whom have applied their insights from the Academy to their career development and to the benefit of their institutions. Our expectation is that this extraordinary opportunity will be the cornerstone for long-term professional growth that will contribute significantly to the richness of future leadership of higher education in the U.S. EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY GOALS a) Inform about the latest research-based application of multicultural competencies in selected areas of higher education b) Promote dialogue and exchange of strategic leadership skill development, information, and experiences between and among presenters and participants c) Guide the development of individualized plans of implementation work by the Fellows PROPOSED LEARNING OUTCOMES a) Increasing and understanding multicultural diversity in higher education b) Developing capacity to engage new models of leadership that can shift university and professional paradigms c) Exploring and identifying critical skills that achieve long-term goals for professional development d) Networking with colleagues to build support and influence within the community of scholars SELECTION PROCESS: "MIRROR IMPACT" Fellows are selected through a nominator or self-nomination processes. Over the last five years, priority has been to select 1/3 of Fellows from emerging executives, 1/3 from executives, and 1/3 from senior executives. Emerging executives see themselves mirrored in executives, executives see themselves mirrored in senior executives, and senior executives see themselves mirrored in Faculty, who are current or retired CEO’s of institutions. The objective is to allow for Fellows to mentor each other and for the Faculty to serve as role models and mentors. ETHNIC DIVERSITY Throughout ELA's past 5 years, the 134 Faculty members come from diverse ethnic backgrounds, with the largest group of Faculty members being Caucasian, followed by African American and Hispanic Faculty. The following set of numbers represent Faculty diversity from the 5-year total: Hispanic: 32 (24%) Caucasian: 54 (40%) African American: 34 (25%) Asian American/Pacific Islander: 8 (6%) Native American: 6 (5%) FACULTY EVALUATIONS Fellows were asked to rate each of the 31 Faculty sessions on value and content on a scale of 1 (extremely low) to 5 (extremely high). The 5-year highest individual average score was is 4.9/5. FELLOW TESTIMONIES - “I am totally confident that I can be a successful president.
