Dean's Welcome It gives me great pride and pleasure to introduce you to the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. These are exciting times as we are in the process of experiencing a growth and renewal in our faculty that is unprecedented in our long history. We have added exciting new faculty members while retaining our core of experienced and outstanding law teachers and scholars, and have been expanding the breadth and depth of our course offerings in response to the increasing sophistication and internationalization of the legal profession. Choosing a law school is a complex and difficult task. It is important for you to find the right fit. Our law school works hard to offer you studies that are both sound and innovative. The Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta is a dynamic institution. Our faculty members are leaders in teaching and research. Where better to study law than in the faculty where the professors write the books that everyone else uses? In the core first year subjects of Torts, Contracts, Property, and Introduction to Law, members of this faculty have written the books that are used across the country. Faculty members are at the cutting edge of research in fields as diverse as law and genetics and security interests in property. The University of Alberta law degree is respected across Canada and throughout the world. We have never deviated from our mission of providing a fundamental core education in law that will serve our students well no matter where their careers take them. Our educational mission is supported by the second largest law library in Canada that has been described as "a national treasure," and by outstanding facilities for computer-based research. Our students stand out among the best. Kevin Brosseau, Fullbright Scholarship winner and former student, told The Edmonton Journal on Nov. 27, 2002: "The level of legal education we're receiving in Edmonton is world class and is definitely perceived that way, not only here at Harvard, but by the international law firms on Wall Street." The most rewarding aspect of your stay at the Faculty of Law will be the relationships you form in our uniquely vibrant student community. We have a diverse, active, and creative student body with numerous student organizations which support a wide range of student interest. With us you will form friendships that will last a life time. Our students are our best ambassadors and are always ready to speak to visitors and prospective students about our school. Our Faculty's recent recognition as one of Canada's best law schools confirms a positive student atmosphere that we work hard to maintain. ~ Philip Bryden Dean
