Family Action Manchester Young Carers have been commissioned by Manchester City Council to provide a city wide family support and respite service for young carers aged 8 -18.

Description

What is a young carer? A young carer is a child/young person who provides care to a family member with a disability, in some cases siblings. This could be caring for someone with a physical disability, mental health, substance misuse, a learning difficulty, terminal or a long term illness. This may include practical or emotional care that would normally be expected of an adult and as a result has a significant impact on their childhood. Being a young carer can be hard and they may feel that they don’t have enough time for homework, fun things, socialising, meeting up with friends, out of school activities. Are you a young carer? Do you care for a family member who is ill or has a physical disability, mental health, substance misuse, eg drugs and/or alcohol issues, a learning difficulty, terminal or a long term illness? And you: • Help them get dressed or washed • Help with household tasks, eg cooking, cleaning, washing, shopping • Pay bills • Remind and/or take them to appointments • Pick up medication for them • Provide a listening ear • Often worry about the person you care for • Taking care of young brothers or sisters or family members If you answered yes to any of the above you could be a young carer and we may be able to support you.
