ILLAWARRA BUSINESS CHAMBER WELCOMES NEW DIRECTORS The Illawarra Business Chamber (IBC) welcomes the appointment of two new Board Directors, John Apolloni and Matthew Barnes. The results of the half board election were announced on Wednesday 22 October at the IBC Annual General Meeting. John Apolloni and Matthew Barnes join Michael Bassingthwaighte AM and Amy Harper who were re-elected to the IBC Board. The new and returning Board members make up four of the eight elected Board Directors, who represent business leaders from across the Illawarra. With over 30 years’ experience in the professional services sector, John Apolloni has spent the last fourteen years, almost exclusively, on SMEs in all types of business sectors ranging from micro home businesses to a $20 million turnover BRW top 200 firm. Mr Apolloni joins the IBC Board with a mission to “represent all IBC members with a dominant focus on the needs and interests of SMEs.” Matthew Barnes is a Partner at Maguire & McInerney Lawyers, and an Accredited Specialist in Commercial Litigation, specialising in building and construction law. Prior to becoming a lawyer Mr Barnes was an economist at the RBA. Mr Barnes said “I have first-hand experience of the concerns and issues facing Illawarra businesses. I will provide ‘hands on’ and practical experience to address the pressing challenges facing Illawarra businesses.” The Vice President of the Illawarra Business Chamber, Michael Bassingthwaighte AM said that “Mr Barnes and Mr Apolloni add to the great diversity of skills and personalities on the IBC Board.” Mr Bassingthwaighte AM expressed great thanks to retiring Board members Dianne Murray and Deborah De Santis for their extraordinary commitment to the chamber during their 5 years of service on the board. “Both Dianne and Deborah have been brilliant assets to the IBC, we thank them sincerely for their commitment and contribution to the IBC Board over the last 5 years”. “I extend a warm welcome to our new and returning Board Directors, and look forward to working with you to deliver a great range of services, events and IBC led policy and advocacy initiatives over 2015,” concluded Michael Bassingthwaighte AM, Vice President, Illawarra Business Chamber. Good news for those receiving a pension. Following yesterdays announcement, the Government will not proceed with the former Governments proposed change in superannuation back in April 2013 (and documented in the 2013-14 Budget) with taxing superannuation pension earnings above $100,000 in the pension phase. This is great news for pensioners which means they will continue to receive earnings tax-free in their superannuation funds when paying a pension.
