Since 1989, the ultimate summer Shakespearience in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The Freewill Shakespeare Festival is produced by Freewill Players in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Freewill Players was formed in 1989 by a group of actors in a truly co-operative, pass-the-hat spirit with the mandate to produce the works of William Shakespeare. Since then the company has attracted over 168,000 people to 27 main-stage productions. These large numbers are a reflection of the high quality of production and the very affordable ticket prices. The plays are performed at Hawrelak Park, in the 1100 seat, canopy covered, Heritage Amphitheatre. We aim: 1. To explore and produce the works of William Shakespeare in an outdoor setting. as interpreted by an ensemble of Canadian actors, directors and designers. 2. To illuminate in a bold, modern way the humanity of Shakespeare and explore how his themes are relevant four hundred years on. 3. To provide further investigation of Shakespeare’s world and his impact on present day theatre and dramatic thought. 4. To inspire young artists in further enjoyment of Shakespeare. 5. To remain financially accessible to all, regardless of financial situation.
