Six years ago five friends met in a Bible study at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. As their friendships deepened, the group often discussed pursuing a senior design project together which would use their unique talents to glorify God by serving others. In summer 2010, that opportunity came. Meeting up with a group of local missionaries from Madison, Wisconsin, Project Grow was born. It was this team of committed missionaries from Madison who wanted to begin thinking about Haiti’s future, through educating the local community in Jacmel on the agricultural benefits of aquaponics. As a group of engineering and business students, our team’s talents were an excellent fit for meeting the unique challenge of taking aquaponics to Haiti. We have nine months to build this system. Though the hurdles are high, by God’s good grace our team will complete its mission. Our mission was to serve the less fortunate in Haiti by faithfully administering God’s grace through our talents in engineering design. Starting in the village of Jacmel, Project Grow fused traditional engineering principles with organic agriculture to begin laying the foundations for a sustainable industry in aquaponics. After raising more than $10,000 to design, build, test and install an aquaponics system in Jacmel, the team decided to expand the Project Grow initiative to reach people around the world. That’s when the Fresh Coast Foundation was born. In an effort to continue the work started in Haiti, several project members worked together to found the Fresh Coast Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing the gospel through acts of service in the developing world. Capitalizing on the aquaponics and water-quality expertise built in Haiti, the Fresh Coast Foundation works to bring environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural and water-management practices to the developing world. Our mission is to continue the work begun by the Project Grow team and continue spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ through sustainable development. Thank you for supporting our work.
