Description

Bert Weeks Memorial Gardens honours the memory of Windsor, Ontario 28th mayor, Albert Howard Weeks, b. 1917 d. 1990. Bert was mayor from 1975 to 1982 and served as city councillor almost continuously from the 1950s until he was elected mayor. He was a tireless advocate for his adopted city (moved from Montreal in 1948 with his wife and twin daughters) and also a friend of those in need. During his tenure as mayor, he opened the city's arms to the Vietnamese Boat People when no other city in Canada would have them. He recognized the need for diversity in the city in culture as well as in industry and was instrumental in saving a Ford plant from moving to Ohio. He also helped bring several new industries into the area, including Colio Wines. A proponent of green space and public parks, he lobbied hard for 9 area parks including Gnatchio Trail, Malden, Ojibway Park Complex and Prairie Grass Reserve, etc. He was also instrumental in saving Willistead Manor when it was threatened with demolition in the 1970s. Bert had 6 children, 2 step children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
