Friends of Colorado Springs Jazz

Our Mission is to promote, inform and grow the presence of classic jazz in Colorado. Jazz. Just mention the word and images start to swirl, emotions rise and memories flow. A knowing smile emerges and seductive, sassy, syncopated or soulful tunes fill the gray space between your ears. The concept of time takes a little sojourn, music becomes life — and life is good. Ask anyone that attended the 2015 Colorado Springs Jazz Party. They will say this was the best of the best. If great jazz is your thing, the place to have been was the Antler’s Hotel where four fabulous sessions of Jazz music emitted throughout the ballroom. The camaraderie and enthusiasm began at the “Musicians Dinner on Thursday preceding the Jazz Party. Musicians dined with their sponsor at the Colorado Springs County Club. The musicians were thrilled to be in Colorado performing once again at the Antler’s Hotel. Friday night began with a cocktail party hosted by the Tiemens Foundation. Herman Tiemens and his family attended. The music commenced at 7:30 with a lively opening from Harry Allen, Bill Allred, Dan Barrett, Richard Moten, Ed Polcer, Adrian Cunningham and Rossano Sportiello, among the 15 musicians who continued to perform at the four fabulous sessions of Jazz This year we introduced new performers to the “Jazz Party” Nikki Parrott on the bass and vocal, Rebecca Kilgore with her outstanding vocal arrangements, Bed Polcer on the Trumpet and Adrian Cunningham on the Saxophone and Flute. Suddenly, a miracle took place. Each musician stepped up with renewed vigor, enthusiasm and commitment. The sounds were magnificent. Each musician sought their inner essence of the union between person, instrument and the tones that emerge. If music defines a culture, there’s just no better way to dig deep into who we are as a people than to immerse and linger with a style of music that breathes life and meaning. The ever popular Trombonist, Bill Allred was our “ Honored Musician of 2015.” Bill has played in Colorado Springs for many previous years and continues to entertain us with his melodious tunes. One of the key components of the Jazz Party is the Master’s Program open to high school students studying music and focusing on jazz. Nine musicians worked with the students from 4 high schools for 2 hours. Four of the students have returned for the third year and welcome the opportunity to learn from the pros. America’s music comes to America’s Mountain. The music of classic jazz masters such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, the Dorsey Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman and countless others inspired The Friends of Colorado Springs Jazz to share the music we love as we strive to sustain this truly American art form. The Friends of Colorado Springs Jazz brings great classic jazz musicians to Colorado Springs each year for your enjoyment.

General Info

Master Class – Student Outreach Program Like other classical music, jazz is suffering from a diminishing audience and a reduced cadre of entry-level musicians and students. The Friends of Colorado Springs Jazz helps remedy this situation by inviting students to participate in clinics with jazz professionals. This exposure provides genuine delivery of the jazz art form. The students participate in a clinic with the All Star Musicians on Saturday and are invited, with their teachers and parents, to sit in on the afternoon performance.
