Description

The versatile faculty of the Frost Strings Program exemplifies the modern and comprehensive musical careers that their students aim to pursue. Glenn Basham, Scott Flavin, Pamela McConnell, Ross Harbaugh and Brian Powell are active recitalists, soloists and recording artists who have an unparalleled passion for chamber music and orchestral repertoire, as well an eagerness to explore and premiere new works, and perform a broad range of musical genres. String students are well prepared for the diverse musical world they are about to enter; alumni of the program enjoy successful and varied careers as performers and teachers of chamber music, as well as solo and orchestral repertory. Undergraduate students at Frost receive thorough training in string technique and performance practice during all four years of study and explore a broad range of instrumental literature, from Baroque to Modern. They participate in the Frost Experiential Music Curriculum and receive intensive private and group coaching, all conducted in a supportive and positive environment. Graduate students delve deeper into contemporary repertoire and take advantage of the vast resources of the Frost School, collaborating and researching with students in other Frost graduate programs, preparing for auditions with professional orchestras and/or teaching careers in higher education, conducting community outreach, and developing their music business skills. All undergraduate and graduate string students perform in the acclaimed Frost Symphony Orchestra, conducted by director of orchestral activities, Professor Thomas Sleeper, which rehearses and performs classic symphonic repertoire, concerti, and exciting new compositions. The Frost Symphony Orchestra regularly collaborates with the Frost Symphonic Choir and Frost Opera Theater in the presentation of works for mixed chorus and orchestra, and opera repertory. The Frost Symphony Orchestra also appears at Festival Miami, Florida’s premier live music festival, presented annually by the Frost School of Music. Graduate students perform in the outstanding Frost Chamber Orchestra and mixed-genre Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, conducted by resident conductor and string faculty, Scott Flavin. All string students participate in regular master classes and coaching sessions throughout the year with string faculty as well as well as visiting musicians from The Cleveland Orchestra, and such visiting artists as Mark O’Connor, Midori, Janos Starker, Charles Castleman, Arnold Steinhardt, Roberto Diaz, and Joseph Silverstein. Finally, Frost string students are enriched through the opportunity to hear hundreds of concerts annually in all musical styles, performed by students, faculty and guest performers.
