Geelong Gallery presents a vibrant artistic program of some 20 temporary exhibitions each year along with a diverse range of artist talks, tours, workshops, lectures and family-friendly activities. Since its establishment in 1896 the Gallery has amassed one of the nation’s finest collections. From colonial masterpieces to compelling contemporary works, the Geelong Gallery's renowned permanent collection includes Australian and international paintings, works on paper, sculpture and decorative arts as well as new media, and is home to a number of iconic works such as Eugène von Guérard’s 'View of Geelong' (1856), Frederick McCubbin’s 'A bush burial' (1890) and Arthur Streeton’s 'Ocean blue, Lorne' (1921). Geelong Gallery has hosted 'prize' exhibitions since the late-1930s and works acquired through these signature events have enriched the Gallery’s remarkable collection of Australian prints and paintings. The biennial 'Geelong contemporary art prize' showcases the best in contemporary Australian painting practice whilst the 'Geelong acquisitive print awards' showcase the best in contemporary Australian printmaking practice.
