Crown of Thorns Starfish Program

Description

The Crown of Thorns (COTs) control project has assist with the control of the Crown of Thorns Starfish infestations on reefs highly valuable to Queensland tourism industry off the Cairns region. The project, which combines accredited training, work placements and culling of COTs, has assisted more than 100 unemployed people to gain employment within their field of interest including the tourism and/or seafood harvesting industries. This project is vital for the protection of the coral reefs off Cairns which attracts tourism to the Far North Region and without control measures of the Crown of Thorns Starfish in place, the tourism trade will be seriously affected and this will rapidly lead to a decline in visitors.
