Description

Our Objective We are looking to open a Bed and Breakfast in downtown St, Catharines, Ontario. We have already purchased the building we are going to use. It is a five bedroom and two and a half bathroom heritage home circa, 1867 located at 148 Geneva St. The heritage home was formerly used as an antique store and then as an art studio. We will decorate the bed and breakfast with the art of the former owners and antiques. We are raising money money so that we can increase the total bathrooms to five so that every bedroom can have their own bathroom. We are hoping to see you soon. Why Would You Want to Come to Stay With Us Our house will be decorated with the artwork of the former owners Laura Thompson and Frank Rekrut, professional artists trained at The Florence Academy of Arts. Laura and Frank opened a studio in Florence, Italy in 2010, where Frank now makes his sculptures, Laura paints, and they both teach and have workshops. If you wish to know more about Frank and Laura, their Florence Studio’s website is www.theflorencestudio.com. St. Catharines is a part of the Niagara area located near Niagara-On-The-Lake and Niagara Falls. This area is of historical significance as it was a location of strategic significance during the War of 1812 and was where the Underground Railroad ended. One place people interested in the history of the Underground Railroad would like to visit is Salem Chapel. Salem Chapel is famous for being the church that Harriet Tubman attended while she was living in St. Catharines during her time spent on the Underground Railroad. Another reason to visit the Salem Chapel is that many scholars believe it is the oldest black church in Ontario. The Salem Chapel, which is with in walking distance of are bed and breakfast, is the oldest black church in Ontario and a national historic site. The church has a bust of Harriet Tubman created by Frank Rekrut. He also created a live size statue of Harriet Tubman that is located at the Harriet Tubman Public School, which is also with in walking distance of the bed and breakfast. There is a lot of history at St. Catharines other than Harriet Tubman and the Salem Chapel. The St Catharines Museum and Welland Canal Centre has year round exhibits telling the history of the city and the Underground Railroad. There is also a viewing platform for the Welland Canal. The city has plenty of heritage sites for people to visit as well. One heritage site of particular interest is Port Dalhousie. It has two places of particular interest to visit. The first is the Lakeside Park Carousel. It was carved from 1898 to 1905, and is still in working condition today. The other is the Port Dalhousie Inner Range Light House. Construction of the Light house began in October 1898 after the previous one burned down. Another city with historical significance is Niagara-On-The-Lake, which is with in Driving distance of St. Catharines. It is considered to have the best stock of post War of 1812 Regency and Classical Revival buildings in all of Canada. This has led Ontario to declare the historical district of the city to be declared a Heritage Conservation District by Ontario in 1986, by Canada in 2003, and was up for consideration to be a World Heritage site. The city includes various restored military sites including Fort George, Fort Drummond, Butler’s Barracks, and Fort Mississauga. It also contains the Battlefield for Fort George. The city holds the oldest apothecary in Canada and the oldest Anglican and Catholic churches in Ontario. The oldest building in Niagara-On-The-Lake is the McFarland house. The McFarland house survived the Burning of Newark since it was used as a hospital and Officer’s Quarters. The city also has various historic plaques located throughout the city. The area is also rich in beautiful nature, which has made cycling a popular method of touring the area. The greatest nature attraction within the area is obviously the world famous Niagara Falls. The city of St Catharines is also a popular place to see nature as it has 1000 acres of parks, which has earned St Catharines the official nickname The Garden City. The area is full of nature trails including the world famous Bruce Trail. The Bruce Trail is oldest and longest Canadian footpath, which travels 890 km through the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Because of the bountiful nature in the area, farming is big part of the region’s economic activities. One of the most popular products created by the agricultural activities in the Niagara area is wine. There are various award winning wineries in the area. This has caused winery tours to become a popular tourist attraction for the area. The Niagara region also hosts three wine festivals throughout the year. The three Festivals are the ice wine festival in January, the new vintage wine festival in June, and the classic wine vintage festival in September. For those interested in pursuing art, there are a few art galleries located in St. Catharines. Rodman Hall hosts a collection of 850 permanent works and has a diverse program of other exhibits throughout the year. The city is host to various theater companies. It also has the FirstOntario Performing Arts Center. The FirstOntario Performing Arts Center has four separate venues to host events. Niagara-On-The-Lake also has some artistic activities. They host the Shaw Festival which operates three separate theaters from April to November. Niagara-On-The-Lake is also home to the Riverbank Art Museum, which houses 1400 artworks and artefacts. If you are looking for a more standard type of vacation the city of Niagara Falls has become a mini Las Vegas ever since Ontario legalized gambling in the mid-1990s. Since then Niagara Falls has opened two casinos, Casino Niagara and Niagara Fallsview. The city has many attractions one would expect from a tourist city such as theme restaurants like the Hard Rock Café, and tourist attractions like wax museums, haunted houses, and a Las Vegas style magic show.
