Description

Vision for Greensboro: The New Venture City To be competitive in a global economy and attract new businesses and young professionals to our city, internet access at a gigabit per second is imperative. Equally critical is the community’s capacity to leverage the asset for high-return outcomes. Investing in both creates a cultural shift that results in a thriving community of economic and cultural diversity. Background: There is a fast moving trend in the our country known as smartcities, next century cities, and community broadband networks. While giant telecoms focus on broadband for large demographic markets, some smaller communities (examples: Danville VA, Chattanooga TN) have created high speed fiber optic municipal internet utilities to fill the gap left by the giant telecoms. In North Carolina there are significant legal and operational challenges for municipalities to effectively offer internet services. How it works: The open access model network will be available to any qualified internet service providers to sell services through the system. The providers will pay to use the network and Gig-G receives 10% of the revenue as a donation then re-invests that money back into our community to stimulate local programs. We estimate that this will total $3 million dollars annually. Who are the partners? Community foundations, private equity investors, and internet service providers who design and build the network. We want to select qualified and responsible partners this year and begin construction as soon as possible. The construction of the entire fiber network may take up to five years. However, we are plan to make it available in East Greensboro immediately. We will offer comprehensive wireless coverage available for Greensboro within one year of construction start, and at that point offer competitive broadband services anywhere in Greensboro. We are looking at a number of different partnership scenarios. “Financing the construction of the network with private money will allow us to build the network much more quickly than we could on our own,” said Larry Cechinni, President of Gig-G. “Working with private partners who are experts in telecommunications will assure that Gig-G is a state-of-the-art network that is built on time and on budget. The city of Greensboro could provide right-of-way access and other real estate assets to expedite the construction process.”
