June is National Safety Month, presented every year by the National Safety Council to educate and prevent accidental injury and death both at home and in the workplace. Each week in June will focus on raising awareness of a different safety issue. June 1-7 Teen Driving Car accidents are the leading cause of death in teens. Many of these deaths could be prevented by following the tips provided by the National Safety Council, including always wearing a seatbelt and practicing driving with your teen. As a mother, I know the importance of making sure that teens are safe behind the wheel. National Safety Month is the perfect opportunity to increase the awareness of the risks of teen driving and what can be done to reduce these risks. June 8-14 Falls Prevention Thousands of injuries and deaths occur each year from falls at home and in the workplace. Taking the common sense precautions recommended by the National Safety Council will reduce your risk of falling. This is especially important for the elderly, as falls in this group account for many deaths and hospitalizations every year. To prevent falls, make sure that your home, workplace, and the homes of elderly family members, friends, and neighbors are safe by maintaining dry, uncluttered floors and installing handrails where necessary.
