Description

The Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS) is an interdisciplinary group of researchers and graduate students who are involved in research related to water quality and quantity at local, regional, and international levels. Members of the GIWS are developing innovative approaches to sustainably manage freshwater systems across the globe. The Institute’s primary research is focused in five categories: Climate Change and Water Security, Land Water Management and Environmental Change, Sustainable Development of Natural Resources, Socio-hydrology, and Water and Health. Launched in 2011 by Canada Excellence Research Chair in Water Security Dr. Howard Wheater, the Institute is committed to a seven year program to address many major water issues. The student chapter is meant to recruit new student members and engage current student members in water issues, explore exciting research, network and idea share with like minded students and professionals.

If you are a student of the University of Saskatchewan and you are interested in water issues and research, fill out an application form to become a student member! Its free and you will be notified of activities put on by the organization and its associates, and will have opportunities to socialize and learn with like minded people. Check it out at http://www.usask.ca/water/about/Membership.php Our Student Committee includes: Kathryn Hearson (Ph.D. Candidate, Civil and Geological Engineering) Studying reclamation techniques for oil sands tailings that minimize negative effects on surrounding water resources. Chris Marsh (Ph.D. Candidate, Centre for Hydrology, Geography) Examining the scale dependencies and emergent phenomena in large scale mountain hydrology and modeling. Kerry Head (M.Sc. Candidate, Biology) Investigating the potential for climate change to impact native fish habitat in the South Saskatchewan River Jessica Johansson (M.Sc. Candidate, Biology) Characterizing and quantifying nutrient loadings to Lake Diefenbaker using a mass balance framework Kristine Hunter (M.Sc. Candidate, Biology) Determining the type and degree of nutrient deficiency in areas of Lake Diefenbaker potentially being affected by anthropogenic activities. Raea Gooding (M.Sc. Candidate, School of Environment and Sustainability) Examining nitrogen cycling and retention in a Manitoba watershed and the effects of agricultural Beneficial Management Practices on watershed health.
