Supporting sustainable soil management and responsible land governance with an inclusive participative process.

Description

The Global Soil Forum (GSF) is dedicated to achieving responsible land governance and sustainable soil management worldwide. Through our activities, we create a common forum for discussion and debate amongst diverse stakeholders, thus facilitating the exchange and generation of knowledge. Together with the leading actors in the field, we initiate processes which foster the application of this co-created knowledge on the ground. A voice in policy negotiation, we advocate for soil management in the context of sustainable development, and promote equitable access to land. Our flagship tool, the Global Soil Week is conceived collaboratively with our partner organisations: the European Commission (EC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and , the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA). More than 450 participants from around the world took part in the most recent Global Soil Week in 2013. Additionally, we organize smaller workshops and events on more specific topics throughout the year. Established by the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in 2011, the GSF is governed by a diverse steering committee comprised of internationally known and respected experts, scientists, and policy-makers active in the field of sustainable land management and soil conservation. Aligned with the mission of the IASS, we strive for societal transformation through a transdisciplinary research approach. Our implementation of this concept involves a collaborative process undertaken together with the many and varied soil stakeholders. Emerging from this transdisciplinary process is a contextualized knowledge, used to develop options for action.
