Go Green Cricket Field

at 130 Overlea Blvd, Toronto , M3C 1B2 Canada

An environmentally sustainable outdoor not-for-profit sport and recreational facility, which offers accessible programming for at-risk youth in Toronto. The Go Green Cricket and Sports Field started in 2010 as a grassroots committee composed of parents, staff and students from Valley Park Middle School, located at the cross roads between the two communities of Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park in Toronto. The committee federally incorporated as an independent not-for-profit, which has a collaborative partnership with Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office to facilitate fundraising. Go Green also counts on strategic sponsors, which facilitated the transformation of the school’s backyard and now help provide the accessible educational, environmental and sports programming for youth.

Description

The Go Green Cricket and Sports Field is completing a $1.88 million dollar rejuvenation of the Valley Park Middle School backyard and adjacent Hydro land. The project includes an irrigated sports field, which accommodates soccer, baseball and other sports as well as Canada's first illuminated cricket field. Go Green is working on creating an inclusive and welcoming environment and youth-led programming for youth ages 7 to 18 years old. The purpose of the program is to train youth in various skills in a supervised safe setting, while at the same time training a responsible team of talented youth coaches. The activities include counselling, life skills, leadership, employment training, volunteerism and part-time employment opportunities. The Go Green Cricket and Sports Field, as an environmental project, seeks to teach and demonstrate stewardship over water, land and nature by encouraging the Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park communities to become part of the Toronto Region Conservation Authority's Living City as “People of the Don." The project wants to bring the beauty and sustainability of the Don River watershed back up onto the schoolyard and Hydro field. It does so in partnership with the Valley Park Middle School Ecoschools program and a Ducks Unlimited partnership with Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute staff and students in the Go Green wetland.
