Curling was enjoying a renaissance in the early sixties and new clubs were being built across the country. My father, Ed Flowers, was at the time a curler and a sales manager for Bell Canada. Dad and four other gentlemen conceived an idea to build an eight sheet club. Sherwood Park Curling was born shortly thereafter with Ed Flowers as manager - and life changed for our family. From ice making, to bar tending, to food preparation, the club became the focus of our lives. A few years after opening a mall located on adjacent land and after only five years curling succumbed to retail uses. Dad was out of a job. He decided to use his sales and curling background in an effort to sell curling supplies. Goldline was born in 1967 and operated in the early years out of our garage. Dad’s innovative bent and fascination with machinery brought new opportunities. Goldline was the first company to distribute the burner for ice making, it was a pioneer in the development of sophisticated machinery for rock resurfacing, and Dad was the acknowledged authority on dehumidifiers for curling clubs. The garage gave way to a small warehouse in the late seventies and I joined the company in the early eighties. Goldline continued to innovate. -We brought the anti slider to North America, -We introduced the first pants designed for curling, -We introduced sophisticated merchandising to curling events -We have been at the forefront of curling fashion -We have developed revolutionary equipment such as the Perimeter slider, the G40 Shoe, and the ergonomic brush handle. - We have launched an innovative Mobile Retail program which brings a fully stocked pro shop right to the club A third generation is now on board. From assembling brushes when she was seven years old, to an obsession with the Brier and the Hearts, my daughter Erin is steeped in curling. I am proud to have her carry on the family tradition.
