Description

On Jan 7th, 2014, during the polar vortex, a simple inquiry on Facebook revealed that the City of Newark has no provisions to house the homeless overnight in cases of extreme weather. In addition, every known shelter was filled to capacity. A small group of concerned community leaders and organizations sprung into action to find a remedy. Pastor T. arranged to open the doors of Truth Community Outreach Center (571 Central Ave., 2nd floor, above Dialysis Center), Newark, NJ for the first Station. Tina Lane and Joanne Pierre began to collect clothing, food and other items, some of which were immediately delivered to Penn Station until the Warming Station could open. Casseem Dewit of L.I.F.E. Outreach came to the table with his years of experience in serving the homeless population to help lay out the plan and engage volunteers, while Debi Hall-Dean of Partners in ACTS began to engage the many like-minded individuals and organizations in Newark to support and contribute to the cause. We are extremely proud to announce that the opening of the vey 1st Overnight Warming Station will be on Wednesday, January 15th from 8pm to 8am at Truth COC!!! While our initial thought was to serve soup and hot beverages, we were blessed to be able to provide hot breakfast and dinners! In addition, Apostle Pator Gennie Holt has stepped up to offer a 2nd site at the Ray of Hope Ministries, 858 Clinton Ave. in Newark's South Ward. To God be the Glory!! With all of this cooperation and success, we still have great needs to make the Warming Stations all that they should be. VOLUNTEERS: People (including MEN) are neded to man the stations for 3 hour shifts. FUNDS: Since fire codes require that each person have their own cot or mattres, we will need to purchase at least 25 more air mattresses at $20.00 each. ($500.00) We will also need additional funds for warming supplies and incidentals. Obviously, the costs will increase as we prepare to open the 2nd site. Donations may be made through this site. You may also contact us for other payment options (cash, Paypal, or major debit & credit cards). DONATIONS: We are also accepting donations of any items that will help our brohers and sisters stay warm. Hot foods and beverages, coats, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, hand-heat packets, paper goods, blankets, sheets, etc.. Donations may be dropped at the Center Mon. - Fri. from 11am to 8pm. If you are unable to get to the center, please contact one of the persons named on the flyer to make arrangements. FACILITITES: Although these 2 sites willmtake a significant dent, they will in no way accomodate all of Newark's homeless population. Ultimately, we would love to see a site in every ward. Please let us know if your church, organization or other facility would be willing to open their doors to the homeless! We wll gladly do our best to support your site and assist with securing the materials needed to get it up and running. "Inasmuch as you have done it to the least of these my brothers and sisters, you have done it unto me." Matthew 25:40 "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Matthew 22:39 Please take a moment to make your donation TODAY! No amount is too small! You may also contact us via Facebook, phone or email): Tina L Lane: (973) 634 1070.
