This week Graydon Hall Nursery Schools was thrilled to host seven special ceremonies at each of our locations that featured the “Raising of the Totem Poles”! These special events were the culmination of months of work by the children and staff on these unique and important art pieces. The project began this summer during the Little Engineers series of workshops with Miss April. The children learned about the significance of these Native Canadian Totem Poles as well as many other important features of Native culture. Each of the schools painted the wooden bases, that had been previously cut by Mr. Steve, with a variety of brilliant colours to make each totem pole a masterpiece. Each of the seven schools created a 3D “Power” animal which is a representation of the values that make each of our locations special and unique. The animals are: Avenue Road Child Care - Hummingbird Bayview Gardens Child Care - Eagle Finch Business Park Child Care - Dolphin Graydon Hall Child Care Services - Butterfly Sheppard Business Park Child Care - Wolf Sheppard Square Child Care - Hawk Stouffville Village Child Care - Owl Each location also made a variety of 3D fish that were displayed in our “River”. Several larger pieces were also constructed by volunteers. Avenue Road created the 3D “Fire”, Bayview Gardens created the canoe and paddles and Graydon Hall created the Teepee. All of the items were displayed with a variety of nature items as well. The supervisor from each location welcomed all of the children to the ceremonies and explained to the children the history and significance of Totem Poles. Miss Diane was an integral part of each event and did a smudging ceremony with sage. Miss Diane also shared several different artifacts that are represented in Native cultures. All of the children received a piece of Bannock Bread as well. Please check our Recipe Binder App to find a recipe for Bannock Bread from Stouffville Village. Each of the ceremonies was beautiful and special. We are thrilled that all of our Totem Poles will be displayed in a place of honour and welcoming and will be shared with many of our future students and families!
