CHILDREN'S DENTAL HEALTH - Tooth decay has become the biggest reason why primary school children are admitted to hospital, according to new research. Last year, almost 26,000 children in England, aged between 5 and 9, had multiple tooth extractions - the equivalent of nearly 500 a week. Dental leaders described the figures as shocking and said they were proof of the damage being done to children's teeth by the overconsumption of sugary drinks and fruit juice.

We would just like to reassure our patients (and visitors to our page) that we at Grosvenor Dental Practice adhere to strict protocols in our cross infection regime. All our staff are registered, fully immunised and are highly trained in all areas of cross infection and prevention. It is sad that we have to make this declaration public but feel that it is appropriate due to the news breaking regarding a dentist in Nottingham that has been suspended due to a lack of hygiene and cross infection measures. If any of our patients require more information or reassurance regarding this issue then we will be only too happy to provide this x

So has anyone seen tonight's programme called The Truth About Teeth??? There was some excellent advice on oral hygiene and acid erosion. ... If anyone would like any advice after watching this, then why not call into the practice and speak to one of our friendly team?

I often get asked why as a manager it is so expensive to go to a private dental practice as we don't do anything differently to an NHS one at a fraction of the price - my answer to this is always 'time' a patient essentially buys time. Having worked in a busy NHS practice for many years I know about the crowded waiting room, the dentist running an hour behind and once you are in there you only touch the seat with your bum and then you are out again! Your basic needs are for the most part met with that kind of dentistry it's target driven and to ensure payment from the nhs contract the units have to be met but in private dentistry there aren't targets the focus is on the patient and time plays a major part in this. It costs me £215 per hour to run my practice that's not profit that's overheads the wages of staff, ťhe basics like electric, gas water the business rates the stock and materials, the de contaminating of the instruments etc, now we see on average 3 dental examinations in one hour and they each receive a 20 minute appointment which would cost them £74 including a thorough scale and polish times that by 3 and you get £222 the profit is the difference which is £7!! Now ask yourself is going to university for 5 years and continuing your professional development worth £7ph? ? Well I definitely for one think it is worth it to make a difference to someone's health and so do most dentists so next time you query prices please remember we are a business as well as health care providers and cannot possibly continue without charging appropriately x
