Description

The Hammer of Hope Ride (HHR) was initiated by Terry Petkau, National Director at Habitat for Humanity Canada as a simple grass roots fund raising initiative in support of Habitat for Humanity’s Sustainable Building efforts and Habitat’s rebuilding efforts in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. The HHR is a cycling event where riders start from a predetermined Habitat affiliate ReStore and four or five days later arrive to kick off the Federation’s AGM and Conference. What set’s this even apart from other cycling fund raisers is the actual “Hammer of Hope” which is strapped to Terry’s road bike and presented to the host affiliate of the AGM and Conference (In 2010 the “Hammer of Hope” was presented to The Honorable Diane Finley who presided over the Housing Ministry at the time) Cycling enthusiasts are encouraged to join the HHR every year to raise funds for their specific affiliate by simply challenging 25 KMs of the route or participate in the entire four to five day event. In the first five years of the HHR over $60,000 has been raised, close to 3000 KMs have been covered passing through 22 affiliate service areas and included 65 riders.
