Hands On Massage is owned by Yvonne Treharne - qualified aromatherapist and massage therapist specializing in how these complementary treatments can benefit older people. I have a DBS certificate. I am a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). As a member of the FHT I am listed on the Complementary Healthcare Register. This is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care, a body accountable to Parliament. What is aromatherapy? Aromatherapy uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering mood, cognitive, psychological or physical wellbeing. How can aromatherapy help older people? Arthritis and Loss of mobility: many oils can help with the pain associated with this condition as well as reducing inflammation in the affected joints such as chamomile, ginger & myrrh. Dementia: the Alzheimer’s society web page has published research articles about the use of essential oils and dementia, particularly melissa and cedarwood. Concentration & Memory: improve over time with rosemary in particular. Skin and muscle tone: improves, becoming more resistant to bruising and tissue damage. Bereavement: marjoram & melissa in particular can be of comfort at this difficult time, whilst cypress can provide support for those facing death. Loneliness: human touch, massage and essential oils can uplift, balance and just make someone feel good. Fear and stress: can be reduced through the use of essential oils to aid relaxation. Insomnia: can be greatly improved through the use of: lavender, jasmine, frankincense, ylang ylang and cedarwood.
