Description

HAPA is a design store co-founded by Maureen Taane and Yuri Bacas Hosaka and launched on October 2011, as part of the Re:Start Container mall (www.restart.org.nz), a project run by Re:Start The Heart Trust to bring back life into the city. The innovative mall consists of a group of shipping containers designed by The Buchan Group (Architects) and represents the start of the Rebuild of the CBD and HAPA is proud to be part of it. The mall was the first area that opened to the public within the Red Zone after months of being closed to anyone due to the devastation of the quakes. HAPA was founded out of “opportunity”. After the chaos generated by the devastating Christchurch earthquake in February 22nd 2011, Maureen Taane and Yuri Bacas Hosaka realised they shared a dream and decided to get together to make it happen. Because life is short!!! When choosing a name for their business, they searched long and hard to find something meaningful that would represent them. HAPA is a word of Hawaiian origin that means literally “Half”, which was used to refer to people with mixed racial heritage. Growing up having access to various cultures have helped Maureen and Yuri shape their interest and thirst for extraordinary (and different) ideas, which they promote in their shop and through their label. Maureen Taane (Ngati Maniapoto) has over two decades of experience within the New Zealand design industry. Maureen is a member of the executive board on the Central City Business Association and is also part of a successful music production company (Tikidub Productions), together with her siblings Tiki and Ninakaye. Yuri Bacas Hosaka was born in Japan, grew up in Madrid and arrived in New Zealand after 8 years living in UK. Yuri is a trained designer with a background in Branding, User Experience and an active member on the Tech Start-up scene in London. Yuri's near-obsession of searching for the next coolest, most innovative and beautiful things feeds the extensive archive of ideas for HAPA. Supporting Local HAPA works directly with many local designers, artisans and artists to create and bring excellent (and in many occasions exclusive) products for their customers. HAPA not only buys ranges for the store but also helps their suppliers develop successfully. Around 80% of HAPA stock is NZ made and out of that percentage, around 80% is Christchurch made, and the 20% leftover of goodness comes from all corners of the world such as Miami, Madrid, Israel, Ljubljana, New York, London... All these products are mainly exclusive to HAPA and are unusual and unique and help complete HAPA's love for extraordinary things HAPA's aim is to keep surprising and inspiring our customers, and to support our local economy.
