The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an Indian NGO. The organisation was founded in 2000. It’s the world largest NGO-run school meal program. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation implementing mid-day meal programme with the aim of reaching out to the children in Government and Government-aided schools. This programme is strategically aimed at providing healthy, nutritious and wholesome meal; targeting increase in school enrolment, attendance and performance of the children. It incentivizes food to bring children to school. Akshaya Patra is the world's largest NGO-run mid-day meal programme. A Public-Private Partnership, Akshaya Patra combines good management, innovative technology and smart engineering to deliver school lunch at a fraction of the cost of similar programmes in other parts of the world. The meal is an incentive for both parents and the children. It encourages parents to send their children to school, and motivates the child to stay in school. The child also gets the necessary nutrients needed to develop their cognitive abilities to focus on learning. The Foundation distributes freshly cooked, healthy meals daily to over 1.6 million children in 13,529 Govt and Govt aided schools across 27 locations in 11 states of India.
