Heard the news? One of the best known and most popular local food businesses in the north end of Halifax is changing hands. Highland Drive Storehouse, the successful butchery located on Kaye Street in the Hydrostone market has been sold by owner Jessi Gillis, to local, family-owned, Getaway Farm. The Kaye Street butchery will continue to operate under the name of Highland Drive Storehouse, with butcher Bryton Bordage and the rest of the staff staying on. The only change customers may notice is that Gillis herself will be cutting back in the next few weeks and transitioning out of the shop. “Selling the business is a natural evolution for Highland Drive” says Gillis. “Chris de Waal and I are fully aligned in our philosophy and commitment to the local, sustainable food movement. I have great respect for Getaway Farm and have watched them grow over the last five years. I knew that selling the business to them would allow for the natural growth and diversification and create further opportunity for my staff, the local community and our Nova Scotia farmers.” Gillis approached de Waal earlier this spring and the sale took place just last week. “I am so very proud of what Highland Drive Storehouse has accomplished since we opened in April of 2012. The community, our staff and customers are so supportive and appreciative of what we offer and of our strong relationships with our farm suppliers. I’m very confident that our customers will come to know, appreciate, and support the Getaway team who are excited to work with the wonderful staff at Highland Drive Storehouse and I know our lovely customers will continue to find great quality local food here in the north end” says Gillis. “We have tremendous respect for the unique and successful business that Jessi has developed. We’ve been a supplier, collaborator and a big fan of hers, so when she approached us about the business opportunity we were thrilled” says Getaway Farm co-owner, Chris de Waal. “I’m looking forward to spending some of my time at the Storehouse, growing this gem of a business in the Hydrostone and ensuring that the team there can continue the great work and service they are known for”. Gillis will continue to run her catering business after a brief break over the next few months. After that she has hinted that she’s likely to be seen in the Annapolis Valley, where she hopes to someday start another business, most likely something in the food/hospitality sector.
