I've been doing a fair bit of reading lately about Creativity and Innovation - well even more than usual! There is much written about the relationship between loving your work and a happy life. In studies conducted with identified creatives, many spoke of their families as being their greatest achievement. Which started a thought trail that it could be a bit like the chicken and the egg. What comes first? If you are happy at work - are you more likely to be happy at home? If you are happy at home are you more likely to be happy at work? Family/partner support is integral to being able to work - particularly when children come along. And we know that many entrepreneurs don't even consider their business to be 'work' at all. SiDCOR Chartered Accountants - sponsor of the BRW Most Innovative Companies Breakfast - operate from the value of making life easier for small business operators. That way they can go home and be less stressed - more relaxed. And we can all relate to how a stressed day/week/month can affect our behaviour, particularly with those we love most and feel safest with. Start paying attention to how you feel both at work and at home. Can you separate the two sufficiently to separate your feelings? Are your work and home life interwoven? Let us know what you come up with.

Not just a great quote for inspiration - this is something each individual and organisation should ask itself... “The key question isn’t “What fosters creativity?” But it is why in God’s name isn’t everyone creative? Where was the human potential lost? How was it crippled? I think therefore a good question might be not why do people create? But why do people not create or innovate? We have got to abandon that sense of amazement in the face of creativity, as if it were a miracle if anybody created anything.” — Abraham James Maslow How do you encourage creativity and innovation in the workplace? Was it on your list of 'to do's' for 2015?
Have you made time in your 2015 schedules for 'thinking time'? It is important for business development to make time to...develop your business! Shake the format of this up a bit as well - every now and again invite people from outside your industry in. Design thinking advocates bringing ideas into your industry from other industries. Challenge yourself and your teams. Keep things moving. One of our favourite phrases is "adopt and adapt"...

"Wisdom is the integration of thought and analysis based on accumulated experience." Goldberg There is increasing evidence that those 'Eureka Moments' we occasionally experience are just as Goldberg suggests - our brain connecting the dots between everything we have seen/read/experienced in relation to our search for a solution to a problem or our creation of a new process or product. We experience these in our 'in between' moments, that is when we are not completely absorbed in the problem or process we are pondering. These 'in between' moments are often noted to be in the zone between awake and asleep, walking on the beach, taking a shower - in other words when we are in a more relaxed state. Next time you have a "Eureka Moment' take note if this theory could be true for you. Please drop us a PM and tell us of your experience - we would appreciate the opportunity to include it in our research.
Why do we feel that we have to be strong all the time? We have many examples of successful entrepreneurs who 'failed' so many times (think Dyson and his 5,126 prototypes, Edison and his 10,000 steps closer to success). And the truth about overnight success is that it's a long time coming. Did you know the iPad was twelve years in the making - no that's not a typo! It's human to be vulnerable, to doubt, to question - it's how we learn and progress. What we NEED to do is allow ourselves a little vulnerability - then get up, find some friends, collaborate and forge ahead! Oh and of course - fail fast and recover faster. Be human! Be optimistic and be resilient!

There is much in the media at the moment (mainstream and social) about racism - changes to policy, racist attacks here and abroad, extremists making extreme comments - it is prevalent. For all those advocates of peace and tolerance and patience and hope - please remember that all it takes for bad to happen is for the good to do nothing and remain silent. Let's not succumb to the fear and helplessness that others have succumbed to in the past. Let us remember all those in history who called for the unification of humanity...and be a part of that extremist movement. With peace and love and hope - have a beautiful day.
Consequences...I have been waiting for over an hour and a half for my flight to take off from Dubai - if we are lucky we will leave in about half an hour. To begin, three passengers turned up late and we lost our air space - cost half an hour. Then we discover there is a sick child on board and the family must leave the plane - child too sick to travel...I leave it to you to decide whether that was obvious when they began their day. Their luggage then had to be found amongst the that of all the other passengers. So three plus four equals seven - there were four people in the family that had to disembark. Seven people have now affected hundreds of others on this flight, flight paths, arrival times, onward flights and so on and so forth. Every action we take has consequences that are far reaching. Thought and consideration for others takes a little time. Without these we can start a chain of events that affect the lives of multitudes - whether personal or business.
I have a dream where I belong to the universal race - where race, religion, politics, beliefs, sex, age, nationality and any other factor that currently divides is merely seen as a 'difference' and not as an excuse to treat any member of that universal race with differentiation. This universal race recognises and celebrates differences and acknowledges we are not all made the same - that we each have wonderful and unique strengths that allow is to contribute to the greater good. This reflects my beliefs in the home, in the workplace, on the sporting field and beyond. Christina Gerakiteys, July 2014
