Appeared as an expert witness near Detroit this afternoon. A quick up and back the same day on Delta. Fun to work with a skilled attorney in the courtroom! The medical images told the true story, again.

How to request medical images for a radiologist like Dr. Herbst to review To: Attorneys, Insurance Companies, and Physicians: Copy to: IT personnel, File room clerks, Imaging centers Our preferences for receiving images are, in order of quality and convenience: 1. DICOM images, sent to our image server through the internet. Three pieces of data are needed to do this: AE title, port number, and IP address (available on request). To comply with HIPAA, you may need to set up a VPN between the imaging center and the radiologist. 2. DICOM images on DVD-ROM or CD-ROM. Ask for “uncompressed DICOM” images burned to a CD or DVD. You may make unlimited copies of this disk on your own computer. Send the reviewer one copy. This way, you retain the original disk for your file. The reviewer will import the images into his PACS. With all PACS brands, but especially with IDX/Stentor or Philips PACS, remember to find and use the “Burn DICOM format” option or something similar to make true non-proprietary DICOM images. 3. DO NOT SEND images on film. You may engage a professional duplicating company to digitize films from a source that absolutely cannot supply DICOM images on disk. Digitized films do not serve as an equivalent substitute for DICOM images. If you have films, contact the imaging center and request a CD of uncompressed DICOM images from them. Inform everyone in your organization that films are obsolete and should never be requested or delivered.
