***FRIENDS OF IQRA*** Iqra Academy's new academic year is just around the corner and the school has many goals and objectives to achieve for the benefit of its students and the community it serves. The school wishes to capitalise on its progress and achievements to date and believes it has the best chance of doing so with the continued support of the skills, qualifications, experience and dedication of the wider community Insha'Allah. Friends of Iqra is a volunteer support group made up of brothers and sisters, both Iqra parents and non-parents. Iqra Academy is now actively seeking to grow the number of volunteers in a bid to obtain more role models, skills, qualities and support for the students of Iqra Academy. Our volunteers currently help out in many ways: teaching a skill at a lunchtime club (from public speaking to cake decoration!), supporting teachers in class, helping to market the school via social media and leaflet distribution, creating new ways for our students to engage with the local community, fundraising and much more! We want your ideas and suggestions! Volunteering is the lifeblood of any community. It is because of volunteers that communities are able to run organisations, conferences, playgroups, drop-in centres, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, open libraries, run schools, set up blood banks and food banks, and the list goes on. Without volunteers such endeavours would come to a standstill. As Muslims, our role isn't just to make our salat and fast and pay zakat. We are encouraged to take on a broader role by working to improve the communities we live in. It is by translating our love of Allah into good actions that we strengthen our Imaan. Islam is a faith of action and we need to demonstrate this. In Islam there is a strong ethic of volunteerism. This does not simply extend to running study circles or fundraising for the masjid. As Muslims, we see our role as world citizens, working for a better society or community. Dawah, the idea of inviting others to Islam, takes on many forms. The obvious one is educating people specifically about Islam and the principles enshrined therein. But the less obvious form is through doing good works and setting an example. This is where volunteerism plays a role. As a community, Muslims need to cultivate a culture of volunteerism. There is a persistent notion that volunteers are essentially free labour. Their efforts are not appreciated and, indeed, are often criticized. We need to shift our perception and see that it is because of volunteers that so many of the services we need are available. Entire mosques have been built through the efforts of volunteers, conferences are run by volunteers, Eid prayers are organized by volunteers, schools are run, in large part, by volunteers, Muslim newspapers and magazines are written for and published by volunteers, and so on. It is also important to note that volunteering should be a priority. If people generally see volunteering as something secondary and less important, the quality of the effort is greatly diminished. Volunteering must be at least as important as other pursuits. Volunteering gives individuals a broader sense of community; and people also feel a greater connection to one another when they are involved in volunteer activities. There are also personal benefits for the volunteer. We understand that our primary motivation for helping others should be our love for Allah but that doesn't mean we can't benefit from our volunteer activities. Many volunteers have learned invaluable skills and have made personal contacts that have helped them in securing employment later on. Also, for students, volunteering is an excellent way to build up a resume and gain a wide range of experience that can certainly help when it comes time to apply to college and university. So, even if you can only spare half an hour a week, we want to hear from you and your ideas. Everyone has something to offer and we would be delighted to hear from brothers and sisters of all ages. Please contact Br Amir Suleman on amirsuleman@gmail.com or call/whatsapp 07904 353848. Jazak'Allah khair Amir Suleman Iqra Academy parent and volunteer for Friends of Iqra

Assalam-u-Alaikum followers, We really appreciate the recent shares and likes. Masha'Allah the good work of Iqra Academy's staff and students is Insha'Allah spreading throughout our community and beyond, thanks to our followers, a lot of which are new this week! Jazak'Allah to you all. A few Iqra Academy parents have recently got involved in the parent volunteer group ‘Friends of Iqra’. The group aims to provide help and support for both the students, and Iqra Academy’s overall goals and objectives. One of the activities of this group is to provide regular lunchtime clubs for the students to learn and develop skills that will complement their studies. As parents, we have a duty to ensure the best upbringing and education of our children and this small activity will be a positive step in that direction. Obviously, we are very keen to grow the number of volunteers Insha’Allah, to ensure we have a good base of parents/friends that can help Iqra Academy, (both Brothers and Sisters), and to potentially grow the number of clubs to offer a broad range of skills to the students. The clubs will begin week commencing 13th April Insha'Allah. If you feel you would like to volunteer 45-60 mins per week to run a lunchtime club or just volunteer to be an extra pair of hands for the good of the school, please do get in touch so we can add your details to the ‘Friends of Iqra’ members and invite you to the monthly meetings. Just comment below or message us, or contact us on 01733 331433 or email the Vice Principal at ribrahim@iqraacademy.org.uk. Insha’Allah together we can build a solid support network for Iqra Academy that can only lead to positive developments for the school and continued progress for the children of our community.
