"Tenshin" 「天心」May 17 Sat. 3pm at Irvine Yamaha Music Center, 18 Sun. 12:30pm at Museum of Photographic Arts Who is Tenshin Okakura Kakuzō? The Book of Tea (茶の本 Cha no Hon) by Okakura Kakuzō (1906) is a long essay linking the role of tea (teaism) to the aesthetic and cultural aspects of Japanese life. http://eiga-tenshin.com/official/tenshin He was wont to regard Japan as barbarous while she indulged in the gentle arts of peace: he calls her civilized since she began to commit wholesale slaughter on Manchurian battlefields. Much comment has been given lately to the Code of the Samurai, --the Art of Death which makes our soldiers exult in self- sacrifice; but scarcely any attention has been drawn to Teaism, which represents so much of our Art of Life. Fain would we remain barbarians, if our claim to civilization were to be based on the gruesome glory of war. Fain would we await the time when due respect shall be paid to our art and ideals. -- The Book of Tea(1906) http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/426399/Okakura-Kakuzo http://www.tenshin.museum.ibk.ed.jp/07_english/03_tenshin.html
"Yokohama Story" ヨコハマ物語 with English subtitles May 17 Sat. 7:30 pm at Irvine Yamaha Music Center There are many films made in Yokohama, but many of them are based on cops, suspense, or Yakuza (Japanese mafia) stories since 1970. Those films took advantage of its wild and hardboiled look of the port town with brick warehouses and steel framed buildings which perfectly much to their stories. Recent Yokohama is changing beautifully as a stylish town and this story is about regular people who live there. You'll see the importance of support among people and feel the warmth living in the community. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95t-Rj79_ig
