HISTORY OF THE ISLAMIC COLLEGE NEWCASTLE Islamic College Newcastle was established in 1994 for the purpose of creating an institution that would amongst other things. v Promote the religious, social, spiritual and educational development of Muslim children. v Promote development and maintain Deen, culture, educational, social, economic and charitable services. v Promote, develop and unify the Islamic Educational System. v Further brotherhood and co-operation in the Muslim Community and to co-ordinate all Muslim activities in the locality. v To co-operate with other institutions having similar aims and objectives. v Fund, build, maintain and own Islamic Centre’s, libraries, masajids, madressah and other similar institutions for the benefit of Muslims residing in Newcastle and neighbouring and surrounding towns and to promote essentially the religious needs of the Muslim Community. 2009 The strategic conference held in July/August 2009 marked the turning point for Islamic College Newcastle Insha Allah. For the first time, so many stakeholders were involved in shaping the future of the Institution. The fact that the conference resulted in the creation of a new Vision, Mission and Core values so as to produce “learners who serve as role models in a vibrant community through lifelong learning opportunities” gave Shura a clear sense of direction. After the conference, the Shura embarked on a journey to identify and conquer the many challenges so as to give new impetus for the existence of our Islamic School in Newcastle. - Appointment of Mr AR Hoosen in the portfolio of Head of Governance and administration. - We bid farewell to Brother Idris Abdul kader and Mr Hoosen stepped in as principal for the rest of the year. - BRILLIANT APPOINTMENT OF MOMIN CHUTEL & SUMAYA BADAT THEREAFTER FOLLOWED IN SUIT. Two male learners transferred, 1 from grade R and 1 from grade 4. - SHAKESPEARE – KING LEAR: October 2011 2012 - WELCOMES NEW EDUCATORS MISS N AMOD : ENGLISH, ARTS AND CULTURE MRS S AMODJEE : GRADE 2 MRS M DURBAL : EMS, TECH MRS A KHAN : TA MRS Z KHARWA : LO MRS Z KUDOOS : TA MRS Z KUDOOS : TA MRS C NAROTH : MATHS MRS B ROOS : ARTS AND CULTURE AND SCIENCE MR T SITHOLE : LIFE SCIENCE AND PHYSICS - COMPUTER CENTRE The room previously used as a library has been converted, and now houses a computer lab. New fixtures and fittings have been installed. Computers would be supplied and commissioned by the 20th of January as well as an air-conditioner. - SCIENCE LAB - The science lab has been fully equipped with proper work surfaces and equipment. ACTIVITIES · BOOTCAMP: 22nd March 2012 Grades 1 – 12 attended a “Bootcamp” which was hosted by TVG at the Chelmsford dam. · AMS (PIETERMARITZBURG) 03rd March 2012 Boys where accompanied by Mr. Raymond, Mr. Sithole and Moulana Ali for a very fun filled soccer tournament. The results for the tournament are as follows: the under 11 won 3 games, drew 5 and lost 3 games. The under 13 won 4 games, drew 3 and did not lose a match. The under 15 won 2 games, drew 3 and lost one game. They were also awarded two walkovers. All our teams did not qualify for the semi finals. · TRIP TO MADADENI HOSPITAL – 4TH MARCH 2012 To help learners experience the various career options medically, ICN took our grade 9, 10, 11 and 12’s to the Madadeni hospital on the 4th of March 2012. · DAILY NEWS TEAM SPEAKING COMPETITION – 7TH AND 8TH OF MARCH 2012 Grade 11 learners of Islamic College Newcastle made the school proud when they participated in the Daily News Team Speaking competition held at St Dominic’s school. · FORT AMIEL EXCURSION – 7TH MARCH 2012 On 7 March 2012, the grade 5 learners had a historical flashback during their visit to Fort Amiel. · ANNUAL CAREER EXHIBITION – 7TH MARCH On the 07 March, grade 11 and 12 learners went to the Farmer's Hall for the Annual Career Exhibition organized by Career guidance section of the Department of Education. READING PICNIC -FOUNDATION PHASE (15th March 2012) Once again the Foundation Phase has hosted their Annual Reading Picnic. · SOUTH AFRICAN MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD 19th March 2012 The learners in grades 8 – 12 participated in the Harmony South African Mathematics Olympiad organized by the South African Mathematics Foundation. · MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER: MRS. ROMA BEMATH – March Alhamdulillah, Mrs. Bemath gave our learners a very inspirational talk on discipline. Learners were actively involved throughout the discussion. This talk has motivated us to handle ourselves and situations that may arise in a cultured manner. · SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT - Community Service Projects Grade 9 learners of ICN – as part of their curriculum – embarked on a life-changing journey during the first term. Projects included: Blaaubosch Jamaat Khana. Epondo School, Newcastle Crisis Centre. Home Meah, · CLEANUP CAMPAIGN BY THE MUNICIPALITY – 18th April 2012 Our learners participated in a Cleanup Campaign organised by the municipality, in the Taxi rank area. · TALANA MUSEUM: (Technology/Life Orientation and Social Science) On the 19th April 2012, the grade 7, 8 and 9 learners visited the Talana Museum in Dundee. · WORLD MATHS DAY 28 – 30 May 2012 The Family Maths Day was organised for the learners and parents of grade 4, 5, and 6 in an effort to strengthen the home & school partnership in the area of Mathematics. The learners and their parents enjoyed the hands-on activities; “brain teasers”; and estimation activities; and were engrossed in the problem-solving strategies they needed to apply. The parents were given a booklet providing tips and strategies for helping their children succeed in these fun-filled activities. · POETRY RECITAL: 31st May 2012 Alhamdullilah, the Foundation Phase Poetry Recital was held on the 31st May 2012. Learners from grade 0 to grade 3 proudly said their poems and peers encouraged their fellow mates. · ANNUAL SPORTS Our Annual Girls Sports and Activity Day were held on 26 May 2012 at the ICN Sports Ground. The event was well supported by all mothers, sisters and well wishes. - MYO - MYO Soccer Tournament was held on 21 April 2012 at the Paradise Stadium. An under 12 soccer team represented ICN. · JUNE EXAMINATIONS June examinations were conducted from the 11th June to the 21st June 2012. Reports will be issued in the first week of the third term. That concludes all the activities of the 2nd term. - RAMADHAAN DRIVE – AUGUST 2012 Underprivileged learners from the school received hampers. - RADIO ISLAM – GRADE 10 DEBATE COMPETETION IN RAMADHAAN - BUSINESS STUDIES: speech contest in Madadeni – September 2011 Hawa Bibi Docrat participated in this venture. - SPRING DAY – 26 SEPTEMBER 2012 With the generous donation from Mr and Mrs Rehman the school was able to plant 20 trees to serve as a purdhah around the school grounds. Each grade adopted a tree and is now responsible for it. · ENGLISH PRODUCTION – CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY – 29 DEPTEMBER 2012 On April 26, the intermediate phase hosted a Roald Dahl festival under the banner of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. This was an initiative of the English department. Thirty six learners from grade 4, 5, 6 under the directive of Mrs R Vahed, were instrumental in making the production a fun, successful, and dynamic one. COMMUNITY SERVICE: 2009 – 2012 Projects included: Soul City (blanket & bread distribution, tarbiyyah programmes, walk throughs), Nil Desperandum, Home Meah orphanage, Blaaubosh Madressah, MAdadaeni madressah, Ncandu primary school, Espondo School, SPCA, Clean-up campaign, Sathya Sai school, LA gratitude, Morrester orphanage, Crisis center,
